The Sierra College Foundation is proud to present the eighth season of Chamber Music Alive!
This year, all our concerts will be held on Sunday afternoons at 3:00 p.m. in the Dietrich Theatre at Sierra College. The theme of this season is music by Schumann, since this year is the bicentennial of the great Romantic composer’s birth. Powerful and outgoing yet shy in nature, Robert Schumann was a composer who held nothing back in his music. His works are thrilling in their rhythmic verve, with soaring melodies and unexpected harmonic twists and turns.”
Our first concert on October 3rd will open the season with the Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra, the same ensemble who performed the all-Beethoven program with which we closed last season and for which you cheered so lustfully. Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture will herald a program of two extraordinary symphonic works—Schumann’s Second Symphony, a work of deep Romanticism and striking power, and Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony, a composition of sheer joy with a “to die for” second movement.
Our second concert, January 30, 2011, will feature one of Schumann’s beautiful works for cello and piano as well as Beethoven’s String Quartet, opus 59 #2 and Schubert’s immortal Piano Trio in B flat Major, one of the last works he wrote before his untimely death. The musicians playing this concert are:
To close the season, Schumann’s Piano Quartet and Beethoven’s last Sonata for Violin and Piano (very much like his Pastoral Symphony in mood) will be featured in our third concert on May 1st, 2011. And as an extra bit of fun, I will perform a group of virtuoso violin works by Fritz Kreisler and Wieniawski for violin and piano. The musicians playing this concert are:

History of Chamber Music Alive!
In a matter of a few years, Chamber Music Alive! has established itself as one of the pre-eminent classical music series in the Sacramento area. The series presents concerts at two venues, Sierra College in Rocklin and at St. Mark’s Methodist Church in Sacramento.
The series began in 2003 as a joint effort by its founder violinist Ben Dominitz and the Sierra College Foundation, with strong support from the College’s Office of the President. Its goal was to bring a high level of professional music to the South Placer community and to offer a duplicate concert within Sacramento proper.
The series brings in musicians of the highest caliber from throughout the United States as well as Northern California. Guest artists include such luminaries as Avery Fisher Prize winner Adam Neiman, recording artists Sandra Rivers and Natsuki Fukasawa, internationally touring violist Sharon Wei, and many other equally prominent musicians. By also including some of the area’s most talented musicians, Chamber Music Alive! provides them with the chance to perform with musicians they may not otherwise have the opportunity to associate with.
Chamber Music Alive! has also presented chamber orchestra concerts that have thrilled its loyal audiences. These concerts have received rave reviews and have been frequently mentioned in local press as well as on international websites. The series now has a national reputation that enhances the status of Placer County and Sierra College.
