Policy
The Equal Employment Opportunity Office (E.E.O.) continues to advance and support equal employment opportunity for all persons involved with the Sierra Community College District. Our activities promote an environment in which each individual’s contribution is valued and everyone has an opportunity to succeed. The Office is responsible for administering comprehensive, district-wide programs which include the following:
Monitoring and Policy Development
Develops, implements and monitors employment procedures and practices to assure compliance with applicable civil rights and employment laws and regulations

Program Development
Title 5, California Code of Regulations – Equal Employment Opportunity Program § 53011
"Equal Employment Opportunity” means that all qualified individuals have a full and fair opportunity to compete for hiring and promotion and to enjoy the benefits of employment with the district. Equal employment opportunity should exist at all levels and all job categories. Ensuring equal employment opportunity also involves creating an environment which fosters cooperation, acceptance, democracy and free expression of ideas and is welcoming to men and women, persons with disabilities, and individuals from all ethnic and other groups protected from discrimination.

To assure that effort is made to build a community in which opportunity is equalized, and community colleges foster a climate of acceptance, with the inclusion of faculty and staff from a wide variety of backgrounds. It agrees that diversity in the academic environment fosters cultural awareness, mutual understanding and respect, harmony and respect, and suitable role models for all students.
E.E.O. Program Development and Implementation
Activities and programs are designed to promote an understanding of the human dynamics that cause problems among people who are different; generate sensitivity to cultural, gender and other differences and remove the organizational interpersonal barriers that get in the way of managing, supervising, working and learning among people who are different.
Programs & Services
Faculty Internship Program
Sierra College’s Faculty Internship Program provides teaching experience and skills necessary to enter the field of collegiate instruction. The program requires that potential interns meet certain criteria and have expertise in the subject they will teach. Moreover, the program provides an opportunity for the faculty interns to learn and practice teaching strategies appropriate for community college students.
Cultural Activities
The cultural activities sponsored by the E.E.O. Office is designed to:
- stimulate our awareness of cultural richness;
- awaken an interest in learning more about different cultures; and
- promote a learning environment that represents a culturally diverse campus community. We encourage participation from the campus community as well as surrounding communities.
E.E.O. Advisory Committee
The E.E.O. Advisory Committee is an advisory body to the Manager of E.E.O. The committee assists the Manager in promoting and advancing issues pertaining to diversity and equal employment opportunity. The committee meets regularly to address the impact of new and existing policies and procedures on the District’s Faculty & Staff Equal Employment Opportunity Plan. Committee members are selected from the Senates, student body and surrounding communities.
Investigation & Resolution of Complaints
The E.E.O. Office is the designated office for the receipt, investigation and resolution of complaints of discrimination and harassment. The Manager confers with concerned parties in an effort to resolve complaints at the earliest possible point in the process. Staff and students with complaints of unlawful discrimination or harassment should contact the E.E.O. Office at (916) 781-0446.
Recruitment, Training & Resources
Recruitment
The E.E.O. Office is responsible for the campus focused recruitment efforts. Focused recruitment is a set of special recruitment activities intended to assure that the applicant pools include a greater number of underrepresented individuals to compete in the selection process.
Training and Education
A broad spectrum of training activities are provided by the E.E.O. Office. These include cultural diversity, sexual harassment and employment.
Consultation and Resource Services
The Office provides information to staff and students regarding cultural diversity, equal employment opportunity, complaint prevention and resolution. In addition, the Office is available to provide confidential assistance to staff, managers, and supervisors identifying problem areas within their division and developing resolutions.
Our Goals
Goal 1 – Accountability
In the spirit of building an equitable community, the Sierra College Equal Employment Opportunity Advisory Committee (SCEEOAC) recognizes that to be effective, the institution must be committed to the principles of diversity & equal employment opportunity. The SCEEOAC believes that an effective educational system anticipates, plans and acts in response to a changing society.
Goal 2 - Building Community
The SCEEOAC is committed to building internal and external communities including partnerships with public and private organizations for the mutual development of diversity and equity.
Goal 3 - Professional Development
The SC values and promotes diversity education and awareness through the sponsorship of training programs and related activities that achieve equity.
Goal 4 – Resources and Support System
The SCEEOAC serves as a resource and support system to nurture a culture of responsible leadership in order to promote diversity and equity.
Goal 5 - Analysis & Evaluating Data
For the purpose of planning, SCEEOAC recognizes that the collection and analysis of data are important components of effective and timely evaluation of institutional needs and trends.
Goal 6 – Financial Resources
The SCEEOAC leverages and disseminates financial resources to support goals and objectives that are aligned with its vision.
