Seventh Generation Workshops
Spring Flex Workshops for Sierra College Staff
Teaching, Learning, and Sustainability at Sierra College (Rocklin)
Frank DeCourten, Becky Siemers
Prompted by growing concern about the deterioration of the earth’s natural systems, the United Nations established several different global initiatives in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in the early 1990’s. In the following decade, pedagogical and philosophical foundations for ESD were developed under the auspices of UNESCO and subsequently adopted by institutions of higher education worldwide. As an outgrowth of the Seventh Generation Project at Sierra College, this workshop will examine the concepts and foundations of ESD as it applies across the disciplines and provide a forum for the exchange of ideas that might be used in the classroom to acquaint our students with the principles and ethics of sustainability.
Date not set, but in January 2008.
Roundtable on Teaching Sustainability (NCC)
Frank DeCourten, Becky Siemers
After a brief update on the 7th Generation project and background on the ESD (Education for Sustainable Development), we will investigate options for emphasizing sustainable perspectives in various disciplines. The workshop focus will be a roundtable discussion on how participants might incorporate this approach into their specific courses.
Date not set, but in January 2008.
