The Seed

Sierra College Patrons donate a sculpture created by Artist Miles Addison Pepper to the Rocklin Campus
The idea for this sculpture was planted as a seed over a decade ago. In 1996 the Sierra College Patrons and Artist Miles Addison Pepper began discussions about a kinetic sculpture to be installed at the Rocklin Campus. In 2004 the Patrons sent Pepper a retainer for the piece and waited for the artist to complete several other large commissioned pieces across the western states. Now, this increasingly well known and respected artist has installed the sculpture he designed specifically for Sierra College. This piece is entitled “The Seed.”
Miles Addison Pepper, himself a Sierra College graduate, also holds Masters’ degrees from UC Davis, Cal State Humboldt and Washington State University in Pullman. His works adorn both public and private environments throughout the western states including the architecturally award-winning Pavilions Shopping Center in Sacramento. More recent commissions include the Seattle Public Library at Beacon Hill, the Oregon Zoo, the Portland International Airport and the Granite Bay Library, just to name a few.
The unveiling was Friday, March 9, 2007.
The Artist, in his own words:
My proposal for the (sculpture) is an abstraction of an airborne seed. Metaphorically I link this image to Sierra College in several ways.
Seeds of Growth and Discovery
People of all types and ages blow into Sierra College from many regions and for many reasons. Each student is like a seed, carefully nurtured and attended to during their tenure in this fertile educational environment. It is a time when many individuals are introduced to, and begin to examine the available options. The disciplines students are drawn to propel their growth and set them on a path of personal discover.
Seeds on the Wind
When students depart like floating seeds to destinations near and far, they take with them the knowledge and experience they have acquired at Sierra College. As an alumnus, I can testify to the assets I have acquired and to the benefits they have brought to my life. Like a floating seed that carries the genes of the parent plant, I carry a piece of Sierra College wherever I go.
