People & Culture Days

October 24 - 25, 2007

A Focus on Sustainability

Zahra"People and Cultures Day would not be appropriate without emphasizing humanity's immediate need to recognize and practice sustainability", says event co-coordinator Sean Booth.

A resurrection of the historic "Diversity Day", Sierra's fifth annual People and Culture Days is a celebration of human diversity – its music, songs, food, dance, dress, and values.

"It's a great couple of days where students, staff, and the community come out to celebrate and have some fun", says Tim Haenny Advisor to the cosponsoring Associated Students of Sierra College.

Sponsored by ASSC, ECOS, EEO, AAUW.

College Sustainability Webcast Across the Nation

Wednesday's opening event will designate sustainability as the celebration's focus for this year. Joe Medeiros, event co-coordinator will start the day with a nation-wide simultaneous event for Campus Sustainability Day. Across the nation, college students, staff, and surrounding communities are invited to participate in a webcast produced by the Society for College and University Planning. Cosponsored by the Roseville American Association for University Women, the simulcast will feature sustainability greats like Norm Christopher, Director of Sustainability of Grand Valley State University, Tom Kimmerman, Executive Director of the American Association for Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), and popular author Bill McKibben (The End of Nature and Deep Economy).

Panel Discussion

Following the webcast (9 a.m. -10:30 a.m. in the Fireside Room in the Campus Center) there will be a panel discussion before the days activities shift to the amphitheater for speakers, music, dance, and celebration.

Student Projects

Student projects in the Campus Center will focus on international human diversity, resources, conflicts, and resolutions. Students from across the campus will participate, weaving sustainability into their projects, from literature, art, music, environmental sciences, political science, environmental sciences, and English as a Second Language (ESL).

ECOS Club Composting Experiment

The Environmentally Concerned Organization of Students (ECOS) will be collecting data on the amount of food waste generated by the college which could be composted. They will be setting up collection points for food waste during People & Culture Days through October 31.
