H.SCI. 2 EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN I
Units: 5
Prerequisite: Current CPR certification, either Am Heart Assn.'s course "C" for Health Care Providers or Am. Red Cross Professional Rescuers' course. Proof of a negative Tuberculin (TB) test within the past year and vaccination for measles, mumps, and rubella
Hours per week: As scheduled for a total of 122 hours (80 lecture, 10 field clinical laboratory, 32 laboratory)
Theory and practice related to emergency care personnel in caring for patients under emergency and life-threatening circumstances. Covers legal, moral, ethical, and operational responsibilities, including external automated defibrillators, related to an Emergency Medical Technician. For certification the student must achieve a score of at least 80% on the regional EMS written examination.
H.SCI. 3 MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY
Units: 3 Transfer: CSU
Hours per week: 3 lecture
Instruction in medical terminology, anatomy, spelling, grammar, and pronunciation.
H.SCI. 7 EMERGENCY CARE/FIRST RESPONDER
Units: 3
Hours per week: 3 lecture
Diagnostic and basic skills in emergency care to minimize patient suffering and prevent injury. American Red Cross, American Heart Association, state and federal agency authorized. Certificates issued upon completion with grades of "C" or better. For personnel in public service agencies who are apt to be the first persons responding to accidents or other medical emergencies.
H.SCI. 20 FIRST AID FOR PUBLIC SAFETY PERSONNEL
Units: 1.5
Hours per week: As scheduled for a total of 34 hours (22 lecture, 12 laboratory)
Basic emergency care, emphasizing patient assessment, shock, soft tissue and musculoskeletal injuries, medical emergencies, childbirth, airway management, immobilization techniques, CPR procedures, communicable disease awareness, and sudden infant death syndrome. Meets California training standards for public safety personnel.
H.SCI. 28 INDEPENDENT STUDY
Units: 1-3 Transfer: CSU
Designed for students interested in furthering their knowledge at an independent study level in an area where no specific curriculum offering is currently available. Independent study problems might include, but are not limited to, research papers, special construction projects, and research projects. May be taken for a maximum of 12 units.
H.SCI. 110 PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIAN I / CERTIFICATION PREPARATION
Units: 1
Prerequisite: Student must be currently employed as a phlebotomist in a health care agency with at least 1040 hours of work experience
Hours per week: As scheduled for a total of 22 lecture hours
Advanced infection control and biohazards; anticoagulant theory; preanalytical sources of error; anatomical site selection; patient preparation, risk factors, complications and appropriate response; recognition of problems with requisitions, specimen transport and processing; concepts of communication, interpersonal relations, stress management, professional behavior and ethics, legal implications of phlebotomy; quality assurance necessary to provide accurate and reliable lab test results. (Credit/No Credit Grading)
H.SCI. 600 EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN RECERTIFICATION
Units: 1 (Non-Degree Credit)
Prerequisite: Possess a current California EMT certification or reactivation of an EMT certification held within the past four years, and current CPR certification
Hours per week: As scheduled for a total of 26 hours (18 lecture, 8 laboratory)
New and updated emergency care methods. Reinforcement of basic knowledge and skills encountered in the pre-hospital setting, including use of an external automated defibrillator. In compliance with California's recertification requirements for EMTs. Students must achieve 80% on final written examination and pass a skills competency examination. May be repeated for credit to meet legally mandated requirements. (Credit/No Credit Grading)
H.SCI. 610 EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES REFRESHER
Units: 1.5 (Non-Degree Credit)
Prerequisite: Current EMT certification or certification which has not been expired for more than four years or completion of H.Sci. 7 within the last two years
Hours per week: As scheduled for a total of 40 hours(16 lecture, 24 laboratory)
Preparation for CA Dept. of Forestry recertification of EMT or First Responder. Updates in medical/legal changes, use of new equipment, implementation of new procedures for emergency management of medical or traumatic conditions. Meets federal and state guidelines. Certification issued upon completion with grades of "C" or better in course and on certifying examinations. May be repeated for credit to meet legally mandated requirements. H.SCI. 620 OUTDOOR EMERGENCY CARE-BASIC NSP
Units: 5 (Non-Degree Credit)
Hours per week: As scheduled for a total of 120 hours (80 lecture, 40 laboratory)
Comprehensive emergency care training applied to the outdoor environment. Covers environmental effects on humans, patient assessment, respiratory and circulatory impairment, bone and joint injuries, and ski injuries. Complies with National Ski Patrol training requirements for Ski Patrol candidates.
