Fresno no match for sizzling Sierra

Wolverines take major step toward state title game

By Eric J. Gourley, Journal Sports Writer

The Fresno City College football team’s jovial pregame session of impromptu Slip ‘n Slide in the mud outside the Sierra College locker rooms developed into joyless frustration as soon as the Rams set foot in Homer “Buzz” Ostrom Stadium.

Linebacker Ronnie Davidson intercepted Fresno quarterback Emmanuel Lewis’ pass on the game’s first play and lumbered 18 yards into the end zone only 15 seconds into Saturday’s action, sparking the Wolverines’ 55-20 Valley Conference rout. … Read the article.

Sierra smokes Delta

By Eric J. Gourle, Auburn Journal Sports Writer

Michael Grant and the Sierra College defense are always trying to outdo their offensive teammates.

In the Wolverines’ Valley Conference opener, the defense nearly did.

Grant returned a fumble 38 yards for a touchdown, the first of three scored by the defense in Sierra’s 54-21 rout of San Joaquin Delta College at Homer “Buzz” Ostrom Stadium Saturday.

“We look at it as a competition between Sierra College defense versus Sierra College offense,” said Grant, a sophomore defensive back. “Our defense tries to outscore our offense. That’s how you make yourselves better. This was just a big win.” … Read the article.

Sierra College grinds down national champ S.F.

John Parker, Sacramento Bee

Although he has been battling the flu, Sierra College football coach Jeff Tisdel sat in his office smiling ear-to-ear after his team made a clear statement with its play Saturday.

The host Wolverines (3-0) won a revenge game against defending national champion City College of San Francisco 27-17 at Homer "Buzz" Ostron Stadium on the Rocklin campus. The Rams (1-2) beat Sierra by a touchdown last year in a game in which the Wolverines squandered several chances.

"Last year was a fluke," Sierra running back Lamon Muldrow said. "We redeemed ourselves this time around."

The Rams were fed a steady diet of "Mojo," the sophomore who prepped at Cordova High School, as he ran for 146 yards on 44 carries and all three Sierra touchdowns.

After leading 17-14 at halftime, the Wolverines opened the third quarter with a 14-play meat grinder that took 6:53 off the clock and culminated in a one-yard Muldrow plunge. Muldrow carried the ball on 12 of those plays and nearly matched his first-half rushing total of 46 yards, racking up 40 yards on the drive. … Read the article.

Wolverines avenge NorCal title game loss at home

Eric J. Gourley, Auburn Journal Sports Writer

… [Paul] Vassallo sacked Rams quarterback Chris Forni four times, twice during a brilliant fourth-quarter defensive series that iced a 27-17 Sierra victory in front of a full house at Homer “Buzz” Ostrom Stadium.

San Francisco, the defending national champion, beat Sierra 24-10 last December in the NorCal title game, known as the Hawaiian Punch Bowl.

“It was an amazing performance,” Wolverines head coach Jeff Tisdel said. “The pressure we had all day was outstanding. I didn’t want to throw the ball a ton because I thought we were in better shape. I wanted to run the ball, kill some clock and play defense. Most people think when you wear them out you run the ball, which we did, but I think our defensive hits wore them out, too.” … Read the article.
