Game Summary:

Sierra College traveled to Chino Hills to compete in the California Community College State Championship tournament on this weekend. In their first game of the double elimination contest, the Wolverines matched skills with the Chargers of Cypress College.

Cypress pulled ahead early scoring two runs in the first inning. A single by Gabby Woody scored Ashley Boyd and a double by Sabrina Hernandez brought home Woody.

The Chargers would score again in the second as another single by Ashley Boyd, scored Lizette Mejia. A run in the fifth inning by Brooke Pefley and one in the sixth by Mejia would seal the Cypress victory as Sierra was defeated by a score of 5-0.

The Wolverines will play Sacramento City College at noon on Saturday.

Game summary:

Sierra (3) played host to a best-of-three series against the College of San Mateo (7) in round two of the playoffs Saturday and Sunday.

  Sierra took game one 4-3 in eight innings on Saturday. The game was scoreless until the third inning when San Mateo loaded the bases with only one out. With one run scored, a base hit by pitcher Michelle Tating brought home what would be the Bulldogs final two runs of the game.

    Sierra began their comeback in the sixth inning as Ashley Edgar got on with a base hit and then advanced when Pado Morales was walked. Edgar then scored on a fielder's choice play. A single to right field by Candice Wermes brought home Morales.

The Wolverines continued their scoring tying up the game in the seventh inning when a single by Courtney Olow scored Lily Nevarez. 

     Sierra took the win in the eighth inning as Amanda Morales doubled and then scored the winning run.

     The Wolverines dominated in game two defeating the Bulldogs in an 8-0 shutout. Sierra scored early as Shelby Fleming singled and then scored the only run of the inning. Two more Wolverine runs came in the third as Olow ripped a double to right center to score Edgar, followed by a single by Bo Newman that brought home Olow.

     Edgar singled again in the fifth inning to get on base. She was brought home by a single by Wermes. Fleming had another hit to score Wermes.

     After scoring three more runs in the sixth inning, the game ended on the eight-run rule to give the Wolverines the victory and secure their position in the State Championship Tournament. The tournament will be played May 18-20 in Chino Hills.

Game Highlights:

     Sierra (3) played host to a best-of-three series against Modesto Junior College (14) in round one of the playoffs Saturday and Sunday.

Sierra took game one 9-3 as Wolverine pitcher Leticia Cisneros struck out six Modesto batters. The game was scoreless until the third inning when Modesto's Sandra Cantu, Britney Borba and Monica Hall scored the team's only three runs of the game. Sierra answered scoring two runs in the third inning as Bo Newman's line drive to right field brought home Nicole Kociemba and Ashley Edgar, who was on by a line drive to left field, scored on an error.

     The Wolverines continued their scoring run in the next three innings. They had one in the fourth as Carli Leary came home on a Lily Nevarez single. The fifth saw three more runs with Courtney Olow and Newman both getting on base with singles. A Pirate error at second base put Candice Wermes on first and scored Olow. Singles by Shelby Fleming and Amanda Morales brought home Newman and Wermes respectively.

     The last three runs of the game were in the sixth inning. Sierra's Nevarez was walked, followed by Edgar who ripped a triple down the first base line to score Nevarez. Edgar came home on a sacrifice fly. Newman doubled and the scored on another Modesto error.

The Wolverines held the Pirates to one run in game two as Sierra pitcher Nicole Kociemba had seven strikeouts.

Sierra scored first with two runs in the second inning. Candice Wermes singled to get on base while Shelby Fleming got on by a Pirate error. Both scored on a fielder's choice.

Modesto saw their only run of the game in the fourth inning as Sandra Cantu singled and then stole second base. She scored on a single by Erica Anderson.

     The fifth inning saw Sierra's last run of the game as Olow singled and then advanced all the way to third base on Pirate errors. A double to centerfield by Newman scored Olow.

     The first round Wolverine victory over Modesto advances them to round two of the playoffs to be played May 12-13.

Highlights:

Sierra took on the Panthers of Sac City in a doubleheader on Saturday in their final regular season series of the year.

     Sac City scored first with a run in the first inning and then followed with a second run in the third inning and two more in the fourth.

Sierra answered in the fifth scoring two runs but not before the Panthers brought home two more runners. Sierra's Lily Nevarez walked and then scored on an error. Ashley Edgar singled and scored on a sacrifice fly bringing the score to 6-2.

With two more runs in the sixth and a final run in the seventh, Sac City took game one with a score of 9-2.

     In game two, Sierra was defeated once again. Errors by the Wolverines in the second inning led to the Panthers scoring their first three runs of the game.

Sierra answered in the third a double by Ashley Edgar brought home Wittney Pierson who was walked.

     The fifth inning saw a huge comeback by the Wolverines. A single to right field by Edgar scored Nevarez who had doubled to get on base. Bo Newman singled to score Edgar. Shelby Fleming got on by an error which also scored Olow. A single by Carli Leary brought home Newman giving Sierra four runs in the fifth and bringing the score to 5-3

     Sierra couldn't hold onto the lead as Sac City came back in the sixth to score three more runs and ultimately win the game with a final score of 6-5.

Highlights:

     Sierra took on American River College in a doubleheader Monday. Game one was scoreless until the fourth inning when the Wolverines scored four runs with Lily Nevarez, Bo Newman, Candice Wermes and Shelby Fleming each crossing home plate.

     Two more unanswered runs followed in the fourth inning as a single by Courtney Olow scores Amanda Morales and Nevarez comes home on a sacrifice fly.

     ARC would score its only run of the game in the fifth inning as the batter was walked with the bases loaded. Sierra took game one with a score of 6-1.

     The Wolverines took the lead early in game with three runs being scored in the second inning by Candice Wermes, Shelby Fleming and Pado Morales.

     The scoring streak continued in the third inning when a double by Amanda Morales hits the centerfield fence and gives her the RBI.   In the fourth inning, the Wolverines scored yet another run as a double by Bo Newman scores Nevarez.

     Wittney Pierson singles and then scores on a sacrifice fly for another Sierra run in the fifth. The Beavers answered as Jackie Yarak hit a two-run single and then scores on an error.

     The final Wolverine run was scored in the sixth inning by Tina Moen. An ARC single by Ashley Merchant in the seventh would be the final run of the game as Sierra took game two 7-4.

Sierra took on Santa Rosa Junior College in a doubleheader Tuesday.

      In game one, the Wolverines defeated the Bear Cubs 3-1 as pitcher Nicole Kociemba allowed only 2 hits. In the first inning, Bo Newman ripped a double over the centerfielder's head. Candice Wermes then singled to bring home Newman.

     The Bear Cubs scored their sole run of the game in the third inning as a base hit by Angela Martinez brought home Janelle Arnold.

A sixth inning single by Sierra's Shelby Fleming scored Newman, also on base by a single.

      In the seventh inning Ashley Edgar doubled down the third base line. Amanda Morales singled to advance Edgar to third. A long sacrifice fly to centerfield by Newman scored Edgar to end the game.

      The Wolverines were also victorious in game two as they defeated the Bear Cubs 4-2 with Sierra pitcher Leticia Cisneros allowed only 4 hits.  

In the first inning, Ashley Edgar singled followed by a single by Bo Newman which scored Edgar. Candice Wermes got on base by a Bear Cub error. Another single by Shelby Fleming brought home Pado Morales. The Santa Rosa pitcher then walked two batters resulting in a run scored by Wermes .

One more Sierra run came in the second inning as Amanda Morales singled, followed by a single by Newman which advanced Morales to third. A pass ball by the Bear Cubs created a scoring opportunity for Morales, bringing the score to 4-0.

     Santa Rosa scored one run in the fourth inning as a single by Camille Sprague brought home Carmen Martinez. The second and final Bear Cub run came in the seventh inning,  with Angela Martinez getting on by an error and scoring on a fielder's choice.

Highlights:

Sierra traveled to take on the lady mustangs of San Joaquin Delta College in a doubleheader Saturday.
      In game one, Sierra pitcher Nicole Kociemba struck out seven batters and allowed only five hits. The Wolverines began their scoring in the second inning as Carli Leary singled followed by a line drive to right centerfield by Pado Morales to score Leary. Delta's Lauren Curtis singled to score Lauren Halvorson.
      The third inning saw another Wolverine run as a single by Bo Newman brought home Ashley Edgar.
      Sierra dominated the fourth inning scoring four runs. A double down the third baseline by Leary scored Shelby Fleming, who was on by a walk. Leary then scored an a Delta error. A single by Courtney Olow scored two bringing the score to 6-1.
      In the fifth inning, Newman singled and then scored on a Delta error.
      The Wolverines final run came in the sixth inning with Olow doubling to right center and scoring on a Delta error. The game ended with a final score of 8-1.
      Game two saw another Sierra win as they began their scoring in the second inning. Courtney Olow singled and then scored on a Delta error. Bo Newman singled and scored on a passball. Candice Wermes then scored on another Lady Mustang error making the score 3-1.
      In the fourth inning, Lily Nevarez doubled to right centerfield. A single by Ashley Edgar scored Nevarez.
      In the sixth inning, Wittney Pierson singled and scored on a fielder's choice play. The Wolverines defeated the Lady Mustangs 5-0.

Highlights:

Sierra played host to the Vikings of Diablo Valley College in a doubleheader on Tuesday.

In game one, the Vikings scored first with a single by Rachael Matthews to score Dani Lopez. But the Wolverines answered quickly as Sierra's Carli Leary singled to right field to score Bo Newman who was on base by a DVC error.

     The second inning saw another run by DVC as Julie Howath singled and then scored on single by Lyndsey VanSlyke .

     Sierra would pull ahead in the fourth inning with Amanda Morales driving a base hit to centerfield. Shelby Fleming followed with a walk. With two runners on base, Lilly Nevarez rips a double that hit the left center fence as she scored Morales and Fleming. A single by Bo Newman would bring home Nevarez.

     In the sixth inning, Newman and Candice Wermes hit back-to-back singles. A line drive by Leary brings home Newman. Wermes scores on a fielder's choice play to give the Wolverines the victory with a score of 6-2.

     In game two, Sierra dominated over DVC. The Wolverines had two runs in the first inning as Ashley Edgar doubled followed by a double by Newman to score Edgar. Leary then singled to bring home Newman.

     The Wolverine scoring continued in the second inning with Nevarez ripping a line drive to right centerfield for a double. Edgar then hits one down the third base line for a single and an RBI as she scores Nevarez. A single by Newman brings home Edgar.

     The Vikings saw their only run of the game in the third inning with a homerun by Dani Lopez. Sierra scored a total of eight runs in the same inning with three of them resulting from a Bo Newman triple with the bases loaded.

     The Wolverines scored their final two runs of the game in the fourth inning as Shelby Fleming doubled to score Newman and Courtney Olow . The game ended in the fifth inning with a score of
14-1.

HIGHLIGHT:

Sierra matched up with Sac City Thursday as the Panthers gave the Wolverines their first loss in nine games.

     In the first inning, Sac City's Kayla Hayes singled to bring home Nicole Wells tand begin scoring for the Panthers.

     In the second inning another Panther, Breanna Canclini, hit a solo homerun over the center field fence to make the score 2-0.

     Sierra would see their only run in the fifth inning. Bo Newman and Amanda Morales had back to back singles. Another Wolverine single by Courtney Olow scored Newman.

In their final game at the Bash at Buchanan, Sierra dominated over Saddleback as the Woverines defeated the Gauchos 11-0 to win their bracket.

      The Wolverines started by scoring two runs in the first inning as Ashley Edgar got on by an error in right field. Carli Leary hit a line drive to left field for a single. Edgar scored on as attempt to throw Leary out at second. Leary then scored on an error at first base.

      Sierra scored four more runs in the third inning and five in the fifth as the game ended in the fifth.

Sierra matched up with Cuesta College on day 2 of the Bash at Buchanan. Sierra's freshman pitcher Nicole Kociemba struck out 10 batters and allowed only 2 hits as the Wolverines defeated the Cougars.

      The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when Cuesta's Courtney Minton singled and then scored on an error. Sierra quickly answered as Candice Wermes doubles, hitting the left field fence and scoring pinch runner Samantha Scott.

      In the fifth inning, an error at first base puts Sierra's Courtney Olow on the bag. Lily Nevarez gets on by an error at second. A squeeze bunt by Carli Leary brings in Olow's pinch runner Brittany Scott. A double by Shelby Fleming scores Nevarez giving the Wolverines two runs and the victory as the game was scoreless through the last two innings.

HIGHLIGHT:

The third game for the Wolverines Saturday matched the team up against the Tigers of Riverside. It was a pitcher's game as Sierra's Nicole Kociemba struck out 10 batters and allowed only three hits.

      The Tigers came on strong in the first inning as the first batter of the game was hit by the pitch. The next batter up Stephany Aguilar knocked a two-run homer over the centerfield fence.

      Sierra tied it up in the fifth inning as Pado Morales doubled. Pinch runner Rachael Litza came in for Morales. A sacrifice bunt by Courtney Olow sent Litza to third. Ashley Edgar doubled to score Litza and Lily Nevarez who got on by fielder's choice.

      The game was still tied as the teams entered the ninth inning. Sierra's Candice Wermes moved runner Tina Moen to third. With two outs, Amanda Morales hits a grounder to pitcher Brianna Olivas who bobbled the ball. Moen runs for home as the Olivas throws the ball. Moen dives into home plate and is called safe giving Sierra the victory.

HIGHLIGHT:

Sierrra met the Pirates of Modesto Junior College in its second game of the day Saturday. The Wolverines came out on top scoring three runs in the first inning as Shelby Fleming singled to centerfield advancing Ashley Edgar who was on due to a Pirate error. A double by Candice Wermes brought home Edgar and advanced Fleming who then scored on a base hit by Bo Newman. Wermes came home on a wild pitch.

      Modesto answered in the second inning scoring 2 runs. Following a Morgan Garcia base hit, Sara Cree doubled scoring Erica Anderson who was on after being hit by a pitch. An error during a Courtney Wheeler at bat brought home Garcia to round out the Pirates second-inning scoring.

      In the fourth inning, Sierra's Amanda Morales drilled a shot to centerfield for a double. She then scored on a wild pitch.

      After a single run was scored by Sierra's Wermes in the sixth inning, the game was called due to time limits with Sierra victorious with a final score of 5-2.

In their first game at the Bash at Buchanan, the West Valley Vikings proved to be no match for the Sierra Wolverines. In the first inning, Sierra came on strong as a single by Carli Leary, followed by a double by Shelby Fleming put the Wolverines in early scoring position. Up next was Candice Wermes who scored Leary on a fielder's choice play. A following single by Bo Newman brings home Fleming. Amanda Morales singles as an error in left field allows Newman to score. Morales then scored on a wild pitch.

     The second inning brought more Wolverine runs as Wermes ripped a homerun to centerfield. Amanda Morales once again singled and Pado Morales delivered a double to score Amanda.

     The Viking lone run was in the fifth inning as a single by Ashley Britton scored Vanessa Nava who was on base after being hit by a pitch.

     Sierra answered with three more runs in the fifth inning. Newman singled and Amanda Morales walked to put the first two runners on base. A base hit to centerfield by Pado Morales scored Newman. It was followed by a single by Wittney Pierson to bring home Amanda. Pado scored on a fielder's choice ending the game in the fifth with a score of 9-1.

      The highlight of the 6th inning came when pinch-hitter Rachael Litza ripped a line drive to centerfield for a double.

      The game was scoreless until the top of the seventh when a single by Jen Munos scored Sam Terro.  The game ended with Sierra on top and a final score of 4-1.

In day one of the North State Shootout, the Wolverines met up with the Reedley Tigers. The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when Candice Wermes drilled a line drive to left for a single. Amanda Morales follows with bunt to get on base. An error at third sends Pado Morales to first and loads the bases.  A single by Bo Newman and an error by the Reedley shortstop score Wermes and Amanda Morales.  Pado Morales then scored on a wild pitch.     
     Reedley's sole run was scored in the fifth inning as a single to center by Sam Anderson scored Jessica Lohse. The lack of scoring for the Tigers can be contributed in part to the pitching of Sierra's Nicole Kociemba who finished the game with 10 strikeouts and allowing only 5 hits.

The Wolverines answered in the sixth as a double by Sophomore Shelby Fleming scored Sophomore Ashley Edgar. Freshman Amanda Morales ripped a triple to left field to score Fleming.
     Sierra wrapped it up in the seventh inning as runs were scored by both Freshman Bo Newman and Sophomore Lily Nevarez to end the game with a score of 4-2.

HIGHLIGHTS:

     The Wolverines defeated the Lassen Cougars in a both games of a doubleheader last Saturday.

     Game one was scoreless until the 8 th inning when Freshman Carli Leary singled to left centerfield to score Lily Nevarez. Freshman pitcher Nicole Kociemba struck out 17 batters and allowed only 5 hits to defeat Lassen's Zhou Yin, a member of the Chinese National Team, who had six strikeouts and allowed 4 hits.

     In game two, Sierra dominated the Cougars taking the game in five innings.  The Wolverines came out strong in the first inning when Freshman Candice Wermes hit a triple to right centerfield to bring home Leary and then scored herself on an error by the shortstop. The third inning saw more Wolverine action as Wermes singled followed by a double by Jena Boncore to score Wermes.

     The fourth inning brought the final action of the game by the Wolverines with runs scored by Freshman Tina Moen and Nevarez. A double by Freshman Courtney Olow also scored Boncore and Freshman Bo Newman.

A scoreless game for four innings, the Wolverines took over in the top of the 5th when Shelby Fleming ripped a three-run homerun.

     Sierra's scoring continued in the top of the 6th when a sacrifice fly by Bo Newman and a single by Lily Nevarez brought home Candice Wermes and Courtney Olow.

     In the bottom of the 6th, West HIlls saw its only two runs of the game. Natalie Pryor and Sabrina Morales both walked to put runners on 1 st and 2nd. Jessica Schendel and Bonnie Romero both singled to score Pryor and Morales for the Falcons.

In the 2nd inning, San Jose's Linsey Doneilo had the first RBI of the game by scoring Melissa Gonzalez with a single up the middle.

     Sierra answered in the top of the 3rd. After Tina Moen walked, Shelby Fleming ripped a triple to right centerfield, scoring Moen and bringing up Candice Wermes, who singled to centerfield bringing home Fleming.   With a runner on base, Courtney Olow tripled to right field scoring Wermes and bringing the Wolverines RBI count to three.

     The Lady Jags would score their final run of the game in the bottom of the 3rd inning when Tiana King singled up the middle to bring home Jenny Montez.

     The Wolverines continued their scoring streak through the final innings with two runs in the 5th, three in the 6th and one in the 7 th.

HIGHLIGHT:

The Wolverines came out strong in the 1st inning scoring two runs but were answered by the Giants who also managed to bring home two batters including one run scored on a triple by Kaysie Johnston.

     The scoring would continue for the Wolverines in the 2nd inning as Shelby Fleming and Candice Wermes would boast back-to-back singles to bring home Ashley Edgar and Carli Leary. Another run in the 3 rd would give the Wolverines a 5-2 lead over the Giants.

     Both teams scoreless for the next three innings, the Wolverines would use the 6th inning to increase their lead by another two runs. A single by Pado Morales would score Ashley Edgar and an error at 2 nd base would score Tina Moen.
