English 50 is a course for the reader who is almost ready to begin college-level academic work. English 50 will help students develop skills to accomplish a wide variety of reading, study and research tasks in the academic environment. Inferential comprehension skills are the focus of English 50: Students will learn to answer these questions in English 50: What is the author's main idea and how do I explain it? How do I determine the author’s intention? What is the author’s tone, purpose, and bias in this piece of writing and what can I point to in the text to help me explain it? English 50 mainly concentrates on essay and book length works. English 50 provides students with an introduction to formal critical thinking, argument and discourse. Students in English 50 will practice their skill development in a lab environment as part of their course work.
