Implanting Your Self into a New Culture
I arrived in San Diego, California from Colombia in 2002. For the next two years I only spoke Spanish. Although I was successful in my work, I thought something was missing. The language barrier was very big; so I decided to move north in order to overcome it by learning more about the culture.
Long hours of driving between work and home left me little free time to take a complete ESL course. Nevertheless, I began to develop my own method of learning English. This included reading magazines, novels and newspapers and watching English movies with English subtitles. All of these methods helped me expand my vocabulary. Finally my new job gave me the opportunity to study it at Sierra College, and now learning English is my obsession.
Hopefully one day, English will just pop into my mind and will be like second nature.
