Megan Seely, Sociology, Department Chair
Megan started teaching Sociology and Women's Studies in 1999 after receiving her Master of Arts degree in Sociology in 1998. She teaches the full range of Sociology classes, including Introduction to Sociology, The Family, Social Problems, Sex and Gender, Race and Ethnic Relations, as well as a variety of women's studies courses.
In addition to teaching, Megan has a long tenure of volunteering in the community and working for social justice. She has lived abroad as an exchange student in high school and again in college, giving her a wide range of cultural experiences which now inform her teaching.
Megan also published her first book in 2007 entitled, Fight Like a Girl: How to be a Fearless Feminist demystifying feminism and teaching activism for social change. On a personal note, Megan became the mother to Molly in 2007--such a joy!!

Joseph Farrelly
For more than 30 years Professor Joe Farrelly has developed and managed social services programs in both public and nonprofit agencies, and has experience in nearly every social services field from early childhood to aging.
Professor Farrelly has been a part time Sociology Instructor with Sierra College since 2001.
He lives in Granite Bay and when he is not teaching, Professor Farrelly enjoys photography and flying a small single-engine airplane.
Jennifer Kattman
Jennifer received her Master of Arts degree in Sociology in 2002 and began teaching Sociology at Sierra College in 2005. Prior to teaching at Sierra, Jennifer conducted research in the fields of Sport Sociology and Race and Ethnic Relations, including a study for the NCAA regarding factors affecting minority student-athlete graduation rates. She teaches several different courses at Sierra College including Introduction to Sociology, Race, Ethnicity, and Inequality, Introduction to Sociology of Sport, as well as a few Social Science/Ethnic Studies courses.
Jennifer is a native of Sacramento and currently resides in the Natomas area. She is active in her community and volunteers at local schools and in the political arena. In her free time she enjoys traveling and attending sporting events, especially Sacramento Kings, Sacramento Monarchs, and Seattle Seahawks games!

Nicolette Caperello
Professor Caperello teaches Introduction to Sociology at Sierra College. Her college career began at the community college level, attending both Cosumnes River College and Sacramento City College. After what felt like forever, Professor Caperello transferred to UC Davis where she majored in Sociology and minored in English. She soon decided that she wanted to teach at a community college and completed a masters degree in Sociology at Sacramento State. Professor Caperello has taught at Columbia Community College, Chico State University, and Sierra College.
Her interests with sociology center around: socialization, media, family, relationships, and crime. Outside of sociology Professor Caperello's interests include: anything with food, travel, camping, hiking to waterfalls, and design.
Kathy Connelly
Kathy graduated from Chico State with a double major in Sociology and Psychology. She went on to earn a Master of Arts in Sociology and began teaching at Butte Community College and Chico State. After moving to Auburn, Kathy starting teaching at Sierra and brought with her knowledge and interest in the area of suicide, aging, and death and dying. She taught a course on this subject for several semesters along with “Women in Today’s Society”, Race and Ethnic Studies, Social Problems, and Introduction to Sociology. During her years at Sierra, Kathy has enjoyed her teaching experiences and learning from her students. She has received the honor of being selected to attend the Great Teachers Seminar.
In addition to teaching part-time, Kathy brings to the classroom thirty-three years of experience in the area of counseling, both in public schools and private practice. She is a licensed marriage and family therapist and although she is not currently using her license, she maintains her interests in human behavior through teaching and counseling.
Kathy is an avid racquetball player and when not on the court, she spends time with her family, including two wonderful granddaughters. Her special home away from home is Lake Almanor where she enjoys the outdoors and the slower pace.
Dr. Santos Torres, Jr.
Dr. Santos Torres, Jr. In addition to teaching Sociology at Sierra College, Dr. Santos Torres, Jr. is currently a professor in the Division of Social Work for California State University, Sacramento. He recently finished an administrative leadership fellowship with the Kellogg HACU/MSI Leadership Fellows Program for 2005. He was among only 30 in the nation chosen by the Alliance for Equity in Higher Education to participate in the initiative, which is designed to train the next generation of university presidents and other senior leaders for minority-serving institutions. He holds a doctorate from Northern Illinois University, a master of social work from George Williams College, and a Bachelor of Arts from Aurora University.
