New Programs & Certificates

Solar Energy Systems

Sierra College will develop curriculum, identify faculty, and work with partners to build lab training facilities. Students will learn essential safety skills, construction skills, and the fundamentals of photovoltaic system installation and maintenance. The training will qualify graduates for employment by the Sacramento area’s private photovoltaic companies, homebuilders, government, and electric utility companies.

Nutrition & Fitness Trainer Certificate

There is a great need for qualified nutrition/ fitness professionals locally. Take just six courses (18 units), which you can complete in two semesters, and have a new career! This certificate can lead to entry-level jobs as a fitness specialist at local area health clubs.

Interactive course combining fundamental nutrition principles and fitness concepts. Includes personal dietary and body composition analyses and emphasizes habits of a healthy lifestyle. (Nutr./FoodSci 4 or P.E. 4)

Virtual Office Professional

A Virtual Office Professional is an independent entrepreneur providing administrative, creative and/or technical services. Using advanced technological modes of communication and data delivery, a professional Virtual Office Professional assists clients from their own office on a contractual basis.

Mechatronics

Mechatronics is a skill set which integrates electric, hydraulic, pneumatic and mechanical skills, all under computer control. Certification takes two years and jobs include underwater robots, ski lifts, semi-conductor processing equipment, bio-medical equipment repair, traffic control and lighting, HVAC, automotive technicians, automated consumer equipment, casino equipment, and more.

Field Trips

Fire Technology & Firefighter Academy

The Fire Technology program prepares students for careers in the fire service, provides educational opportunities for those currently employed within the fire service, and provides educational training opportunities for volunteer persons.

Astronomy Department's Robotic Observatory at NCC

With a Celestron 11" SCT telescope, CCD camera, video monitoring, All Sky camera and remote image acquisition and telescope control, this new observatory is used for Astronomy classes, continuing education and "Star Parties" in the Grass Valley area. More at the Astronomy web pages.

Pharmacy Technician Training Program

Offered through our Community Education Program, the Pharmacy Technician Training Program trains students for the increased pharmaceutical needs of a larger, older population. Growth in this occupation will be almost as fast as the average for all others in the state.
