Article I
Name
- Section 1: The name of this organization shall be The Sierra College Law Club.
- Section 2: We strive to assist future law students in their advancement toward achieving a law degree, to provide a forum for discussion of current legal issues, and to inform Sierra College students of changing public legal matters.
Article II
Memberships
- Section 1: Any student of Sierra College with a general interest in law may be a member of the Sierra College Law Club.
Average Members
Committees: Club Members may volunteer for any committee or any project.
Student Papers: Club Members and non-Club Members may volunteer to research and write an essay on a legal issue OR submit an essay they already wrote for a class, etc. that explores a legal issue. Essays will be submitted to the Literature Committee. Selected essays will be posted on the club web site.
F.Y.I. (Public Awareness Fliers): Club Members may volunteer to research and write a brief on current legislation pertinent to the public. Briefs will be submitted to the Literature Committee. Selected Briefs will be distributed to the public.
Inter-Club Meetings: The Officers and Club Members will rotate as Representatives of The Law Club to Sierra College Inter-Club Meetings. This Representative will be elected during the Law Club Meeting that precedes the next Inter-Club Meeting.
Senate Meetings: The Officers and Club Members will rotate as Representatives of the Law Club to the Student Senate of Sierra College. This Representative will be elected during the Law Club Meeting that precedes the next Student Senate Meeting.
Article III
Officers
- Section 1: To be eligible to be an elected officer of the Sierra College Law Club the student must have completed, or currently be enrolled in, at least one prelaw class, or have served as a member of the Sierra College Law Club for at least one semester. The list of officers and duties is as follows:
Advisor
Forms: The Advisor will be responsible for submitting all necessary paperwork. For example, paperwork to student senate, facilities requests, etc. These tasks may be delegated.
Workshops: The Advisor will be responsible for developing Workshops open to the entire student body. The topics may change.
Internships: The advisor will address the role of Internships in law in Workshops and will inform students of any she learns of. But contacting the on-campus employment office will be the responsibility of the president.
President
Communication
Meeting Agendas: The President will prepare and E-Mail* upcoming Meeting Agendas.
Events Calendar: The President will prepare, update, and E-Mail* the Events Calendar.
Reminders: The President will E-Mail* reminders to club members. For example, when club members must bring an important item or must meet an important deadline, the president should remind them of that responsibility. This may also be done by the Vice President.
Oversight
Officers: The President will oversee the activities of the Officers. The President will require the Officers to provide Task Sheets projecting the needs and responsibility-division of upcoming projects, provide Reports detailing progress when necessary, and give Oral Reports on important information to club members at meetings.
Committees: The President will oversee the activities of the Committees. The President will require the Committee Heads to provide Task Sheets projecting the needs and responsibility-division of upcoming projects, provide Reports detailing progress when necessary, and give Oral Reports on important information to club members at meetings.
Projects
Student Discussions: The President will moderate the Student Discussions of current events and controversial issues.
Guest Speakers: The President will invite Guest Speakers.
Events: The President will serve as Project Manager for all large-scale events. The President will delegate responsibilities to Committees, provide deadlines, etc.
Law Club Survival Guide: The President will facilitate the maintenance of the Law Club Survival Guide, but it is the responsibility of all Officers to contribute.
Vice President
Communication
Reminders: The Vice President will E-Mail* reminders to club members. For example, when club members must bring an important item or must meet an important deadline, the president should remind them of that responsibility. This may also be done by the President.
Projects
Field Trips: The Vice President will plan Field Trips. For example, the club may observe a real courthouse trial or visit a law school.
Fundraisers: The Vice President must oversee all Fundraisers. They will essentially act as a project manager.
Treasurer
Finances: The Treasurer will submit all the information required by the Student Senate to the Student Senate. They will help the Vice President plan Field Trips and Fundraisers, because of their monetary elements.
Secretary
Semester Log
Meeting Minutes: The Secretary will record Meeting Minutes and will submit them to the Student Senate when required. The Secretary will routinely E-Mail* these Minutes to club members to keep them informed.
Meeting Roster: The Secretary will maintain the Club Roster and provide a copy at every meeting to record the attendance of club members.
Club Member Contact Sheet: The Secretary will maintain the Club Member Contact Sheet and provide it to all club members.
Guest Contact Sheet: The Secretary will maintain the Guest Contact Sheet and provide it to the Appreciation Committee.
Public Relations Director
Recruitment: The Public Relations Director will organize a publicity campaign at the beginning of each semester to recruit new members.
Publicity, Posters and Promotion: The Public Relations Director will organize a publicity campaign for every large-scale project.
T-Shirts: The Public Relations Director will negotiate the purchase of T-Shirts for club members every year.
F.Y.I. (Public Awareness Fliers): The Public Relations Director will organize the printing and distributing of the club’s F.Y.I. Fliers.
Internal Communications Director???
Web master
Web site: The Web master will routinely update the information on the club’s web site. Each officer is responsible for providing information to the Web master. The Web master is responsible for providing the officers with deadlines for this information.
Literature Committee
Student Papers: The Literature Committee will collect excellent papers written by Students, edit them, have them approved by the Advisor and club, and provide them to the Web master to post on the club’s web site.
F.Y.I. (Public Awareness Fliers): The Literature Committee will recruit volunteers to research and write a brief on current legislation pertinent to the public. The Literature Committee will edit these papers, format them, have them approved by the Advisor and the club, and provide them to the Public Relations Director.
Appreciation Committee
Thank-You’s: The Appreciation Committee will express appreciation to every person that contributes to The Law Club. The Appreciation Committee will send thank-you cards and possibly gifts to Guest Speakers, Sierra College Staff, and any other person that contributes to The Law Club.
- Section 2: Officers shall serve for a term of one semester and hold their respective positions until the following semester’s elections take place, unless an officer is impeached from their position. Impeachment will take place only after a fair warning is given to the offending officer, which if after such warning is administered the officer still fails to perform to his/her expected level, a majority vote from the executive officers will result in removal of the offending officer.
Article IV
Elections and Vacancies
- Section 1: Elections shall take place on the third Thursday of the first semester. Thus candidates shall have two weeks to campaign prior to each election and must make notice to an executive officer of their entrance to the race at least one week prior to election day. On the third Thursday of each new semester candidates shall have five minutes to deliver a speech and voting will commence at the end of the meeting when all speeches are finished Elections for office will be granted by a majority vote from the Sierra College Law Club members and pending verification of the required qualifications.
- Section 2: Vacancies, with exception to the office of President, shall be filled by any officer whom meets the qualifications of running for an executive officer position and also receives a majority vote by the Sierra College Law Club members. The vacancy of the office of the President shall be filled by the Vice President, with normal vacancy procedures ensuing for the vacant position of Vice President.
Article V
Financial Policy
- Section 1: The club is financially responsible for all its expenditures.
- Section 2: All expenditures must follow the District’s Purchase Order Policy.
- Section 3: All club expenditures will be voted on by club members at an official club meeting.
Article VI
Constitutional Changes
- Section 1: Constitutional changes shall be ratified by a 2/3 vote of the club members.
