Personal Development & Counseling Courses

The Counseling department provides a variety of courses aimed at promoting student success. They are offered at Rocklin and Grass Valley.

College Study Skills
3 CSU/UC 3 lecture Provides strategies and in college, life, and career. Memory improvement, reading more effectively, note-taking and test-taking strategies. Effective techniques for self-development, motivation, attitude, time management, managing stress and goal setting. Introduction to college resources to provide ongoing academic support.
P.D. 6 3 CSU 3 lecture Provides information and assistance with the process of career planning. Includes career exploration, decision making, job search strategies and assessment of personality, interests, skills, and abilities.
P.D. 7 1 CSU 18 lecture Addresses the concerns and issues of student athletes and is recommended in the first semester of intercollegiate athletics. "Course topics include support services at Sierra, career planning, study skills, matriculation rules, NCAA eligibility rules, nutrition and weight control, fitness and injury prevention, drugs an chemical dependency, sexual harassment, recruitment, and scholarships.

College Orientation
1 CSU As scheduled for a total of 18 units Orientation to college covering time management, making, and the steps to choosing a major. Students will formulate an educational plan to ensure in reaching educational goals.
P.D. 9 1 CSU 18 lecture Verbal and nonverbal techniques for dealing with people more fairly, and neither too passively nor too aggressively. Philosophy behind assertiveness. Cultural and social differences in assertiveness.

Self-Assessment and Career Exploration Through Technology
0.5 CSU As scheduled for a total of 15 lecture & activity. Assists students in self-assessment, decision making, and career exploration through the use of technology and career assessment tools.

Personal Growth
1 CSU 18 lecture Introductory strategies to identify strengths, weaknesses and potential for personal growth in the areas of self-esteem, assertiveness, stress management, communication skills, time management, decision making, goal setting and problem solving.

Student Leadership Development
1 CSU 3 (1 lecture, 2 activity) Leadership in student government, campus clubs and non-academic contexts. Application of practical leadership skills on out-of-class projects, includes planning and running effective meetings, parliamentary procedure, group leadership and motivation techniques.

Career Exploration Internship
0.5-4 CSU   Exposure to business/industry, related to student's educational or occupational goals, which develops career awareness, experience and knowledge with a focus on job skills that would enhance academic learning. May be taken four times for credit.

Careers in Computer Industry
0.5 CSU As scheduled for a total of 9 lecture hours Career exploration in the computer industry. Includes orientation to the academic program at Sierra College, employment opportunities, career pathways, educational planning for the Associate degrees, certificate, transfer, research of labor market and occupational information. (Credit/No Credit Grading)
