(scholarship endowment funding varies)
Wayne Towne, a farm boy from Nebraska, enrolled in Placer College in 1936. Burt Teagarden, bookkeeper for the Auburn Fruit Exchange, gave him a job and his wife Emma encouraged his continuance in school by providing room and board. Howard Woodside, Athletic Director and football coach at the time, served as a model and supporter. Wayne excelled in athletics as well as in the classroom. As an accounting major, he went on to become very successful and wanted to show his appreciation to Placer Junior College (now Sierra) while recognizing those people who played a significant role in his success. He has established a perpetual endowment which funded the Teagarden-Towne-Woodside press box at the football stadium and will continue to provide scholarships to continuing and/or transferring students.
The applications will be reviewed and finalists selected by the following committee: Physical Education Division Department Chair, Dean of Health, Physical Education and Recreation Management/Athletics Director, Athletic Counselor and Athletic Department Eligibility Specialist.
