Applicant must submit a portfolio of original writing, which can be essays and papers done for classes and polished for the portfolio. It may include an essay written especially for the application. A suggested topic for such an essay: Applicant’s personal discovery of an author or work that "opened a door" for the applicant. It is preferred that at least one essay on a literary topic be included in the portfolio.
