The mission of the Sierra College Learning Center is to provide academic assistance to the college's students. Our primary goal is to create an open atmosphere of learning and support for all who will benefit from one-to-one peer tutoring and drop-in tutoring. We will be aware of the intellectual and emotional growth and development of all learners with diverse goals, abilities, and needs.
Goals
- Provide tutorial assistance to help students improve their performance in their classes.
- Tutors will emphasize learning strategies that enable students to become independent learners.
- Work cooperatively with faculty and staff across campus to improve opportunities for students to be successful.
- Tutors and staff will benefit personally and professionally by their experience working in the Centers by becoming stronger students and increasing their sensitivity to the needs of others through interaction with the students they assist and other tutors.
- Provide learning support for special needs students, including returning adults, culturally diverse students, the physically challenged, first-generation college students, and other at-risk student populations.
- Serve as a public service in tutoring assistance for local requests within the community.
- Provide tutors and staff with training and opportunities for personal and professional development.
- Maintain an equitable and encouraging work environment that includes provisions for student and staff in an agreeable and supportive atmosphere.
- Maintain non-discriminatory practices in operations and services.
- Utilize electronic resources to support Center operations and communications, public relations, tutor training, distance learning supports, access to student success resources, and online tutoring.
