Active Duty/ Montgomery GI Bill - Chapter 30

Welcome to Sierra College! This information is designed to assist you in applying for your VA education benefits (Chapter 30 or Chapter 31) at Sierra College. Please do not hesitate to contact this office if you have any questions or need clarification. We look forward to working with you to meet your educational goal!

  1. COMPLETE AN APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION to Sierra College. The application can be obtained from the Sierra College Admissions Office located in the Administration Building or printed out online and filled out.
  2. COMPLETE VA FORM 22-1990, Application for Education Benefits. (If you are transferring here from another school at which you used V.A. Education Benefits, you must complete VA FORM 22-1995 instead). You may pick up a hard copy of the VA application in J8, or you can apply online ath the VA website. COMPLETE THE VETERANS ENROLLMENT CARD for the term you want to receive benefits.
  3. BRING THIS OFFICE A COPY OF YOUR DD214, MEMBER 4 COPY. This is required for evaluation for Military Service Credit. See catalog for more information.
  4. If you had remaining entitlement under the Vietnam Era GI Bill on December 31, 1989, and meet the eligibility requirements, you can claim dependents for additional money. You must COMPLETE VA FORM 21-686c and provide certified copies of birth certificates, marriage certificates, divorce declarations, etc.
  5. TAKE THE ASSESSMENT TESTS for math, English, and reading and provide this office with the test results. Testing schedules are available from the Assessment Office. If you took theses tests at another college, you may contact that college and request the scores be sent to Sierra College.
  6. PROVIDE THIS OFFICE WITH OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS OF ALL OTHER COLLEGES ATTENDED. This includes any colleges you attended before, during, or after your military service.
  7. MEET WITH AN ACADEMIC COUNSELOR FOR A STUDENT EDUCATION PLAN (SEP) . This education plan is an evaluation of prior college credit and will also list out each class you need to take in order to reach your education goal.
Before the Sierra College Veterans Office can make a SEP appointment, you must have completed all of the previous steps listed above and all required documents are on file. Please call 781-0439 to schedule your SEP appointment once you have completed all of the above steps. NOTE: Prepare early! Counseling appointments are limited and could delay certification of enrollment.
  8. REGISTER FOR COURSES. This step may fall anywhere in this process. Be sure to register according to the PASS appointment you are assigned by the Admissions Office. Although you may register for any courses, only those courses that are listed on your SEP will be certified to VA.

NOTE: Some types of courses can have an effect on your education benefits, such as: Television courses, short-term courses, field trips, non-degree credit courses, open-entry/open exit courses, course repeats, remedial/deficiency courses. Please contact this office for more information.

This is the point where the Sierra College Veterans Educational Services Office certifies to VA that you are enrolled in the College. The classes listed on the SEP will be the only classes that can be certified for your benefits.

Other Important Information:

  • You are responsible for notifying this office within 30 days of any changes to your enrollment.
  • You will need to complete a new Veterans Enrollment Card according to the deadlines posted in the Veterans Educational Services Office each semester; benefits do not automatically roll over to the next semester.
  • All students who receive VA education benefits are required to maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. to meet minimum standards of progress.
