Behind the power hitting of sophomore Ashley Osier, the Sierra College softball team crushed the Santa Rosa Jr. College Bear Cubs 14-1 Wednesday afternoon in Rocklin to claim its second Big 8 conference championship in three years.
Osier, who is headed to the University of West Alabama on scholarship, ripped a pair of two-run, line-drive home runs in her first two at-bats, giving her 17 on the season. Her season total makes her the top home run hitter in 2012. The two homers nudged the Wolverines past Mt. San Antonio College for the team homer title with 67.
Emily Snow improved to 9-0 with the win, striking out two, walking none and giving up two hits in four innings. Katie Bell picked up the save. Jenna Thorne and Taylor McGregor each went 3-3 against the Bear Cubs (18-21, 6-14).
Coach Darci Brownell’s Wolverines ended the regular season 35-5 overall, 19-2 in the rugged Big 8. Having spent much of the year as the state’s top-ranked team, Sierra is ranked fourth in the current JC Scores state poll.
Sierra is a good bet to host an opening round playoff series as either the one or two seed. The College of the Siskiyous is California’s top-ranked team and will likely be the number one seed. Playoff seedings will be announced this weekend.
