For the second week in a row, a Sierra College softball pitcher has accepted a scholarship offer from a four-year university. Today, at a signing ceremony at the Wolverine Softball Complex, sophomore hurler Ashley Osier inked a deal with the University of West Alabama. Osier joins team-mate Katie Bell, who signed last week with Simpson University in Redding, as the first two scholarship winners this year from Coach Darci Brownell’s Wolverines.
Osier has had an impressive season in the circle and at the plate in leading the Wolverines to the top of the Big 8 conference. She leads the team in all pitching categories with a 14-2 mark, 56 strikeouts in 91 innings pitched, a 2.51 ERA, nine complete games and a pair of shutouts.
Ashley has been ranked with the state leaders all season as a power hitter with 14 home runs – good for second in the state – and a team-leading .939 slugging percentage. The right-hander from Rio Linda high school is second on the team with a .429 batting average, 39 runs scored, 15 walks and 38 RBI.
Sierra is currently 29-5 overall, 13-2 in the Big 8 and is ranked second in the north and fourth in the state in this week’s JC Scores poll.
The University of West Alabama is an NCAA Division II school located in Livingston, Ala. A member of the Gulf South Conference, the Tigers finished 14th in the final 2011 Division II poll and are 147-88 in five years under head coach Will Atkinson.
