Sierra College basketball player Drew Brandon was named the 2013 California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) and California Community College Sports Information Association Male Athlete of the Month for January. In his seven games in the month of January, the Wolverines’ sophomore floor leader averaged 19.3 points, 7.7 assists, 7.1 rebounds, and 3.9 steals per game.
While his seven-game statistics are certainly gaudy, it was his Jan. 25 performance against rival American River College that earned Brandon statewide recognition. Against the Beavers, Brandon scored 38 points, pulled in nine boards, handed out nine assists, and had four steals. He scored 11 of the Wolverines’ final 13 points to lead them to a 77-66 victory.
“Maybe only one other time in all my years of coaching, have I seen an individual performance like Drew had against ARC,” said Wolverine Head Coach John Fusano. “ARC came in poised to beat us and Drew made sure that didn’t happen.”
Brandon is a 6’3” point guard from Corona, CA, where he attended Santiago High School. He is a major reason the Wolverines are having one of their most successful seasons in the Fusano era. Sierra is 18-7 overall and their 9-3 conference mark is good for second place in the rugged Big 8. The Wolverines are ranked 10th in the state and sixth in northern California in the Feb 18 California Community Colleges Men’s Basketball Coaches Association poll.
