Sierra College Theatre Arts Department announces its spring production of Leaving Iowa, a charming comedy about family vacations. The show will be performed in the Dietrich Theatre on the Rocklin Campus and runs March 28, through April 6, 2014 and is directed by Scott Adams.
First produced at Jeff Daniels’ Purple Rose Theatre Company in 2004, Leaving Iowa is a quick-tempo memory play that cleverly weaves together past and present. The story is told through the eyes of Don Browning, a writer who returns home 3 years after the death of his father to deliver his ashes to his father’s childhood home. But when Don discovers Grandma’s house is now a grocery store, he sets out on a physical and emotional journey across Iowa and the mid-west searching for a proper resting place for his father. This father-and-son car ride seamlessly shifts from Don’s present to his memories of the annual, tortuous family vacations of his childhood. Leaving Iowa is a delightful postcard to parents from “the greatest generation” and is a toast to their idealism while poking fun at the classic family road trip.
