Former Sierra College All-American catcher Annette Merjano, now at Concordia University, was named the NAIA National Softball Player of the Week, the NAIA announced Tuesday.
Merjano led Concordia to a 7-1 record March 17-23, batting .476 with four home runs, two doubles, 15 RBI and 13 runs scored. The senior first baseman from Auburn and Del Oro High School is currently fifth in the NAIA in home runs (10) and RBI (43), eighth in runs scored (37) and ninth in total bases (75). Merjano was a key member of Concordia’s 2013 NAIA national championship squad.
A two-year starter for head coach Darci Brownell at Sierra, Merjano helped the Wolverines to the 2012 Big 8 championship and the CCCAA Softball State Championship final four tournament. Her 72 hits and 20 doubles led Sierra, while her 15 home runs, three triples and 59 RBI were second on the team her sophomore season.
Merjano, in 2012, was named the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Junior College Catcher of the Year and earned NFCA All-America, All-NorCal 1st Team, and All-Big 8 1st Team honors.
Sierra College softball is an elite team in one of California’s elite conferences: the Big 8. Since 2000, Head Coach Darci Brownell’s Wolverines have produced 14 NFCA All-American, 14 1st-team All-State, 21 All-NorCal, 52 1st-team All-Conference, and 16 Academic All-Conference players.
