Starting the weekend off right, the Lady Wolverines scratched and clawed their way through their opening round matchup against Modesto with a 12-7 victory. Showing their maturity and dominance, the five starting sophomores for the Lady Wolverines scored all of the goals in the contest to lead the team to victory. Ashley Brown, Tess Hurlburt, and Jordan Meyer scored 3 goals apiece, while fellow sophomores Rachael Odell and Ja’mae Hurley scored 2 & 1 respectively. Freshman goalie Candace Timm had 11 saves in the goal to aid the defense.
In the heart-breaker game of the tournament, the Lady Wolverines got off to a slow start against their cross-town rival American River College, trailing 6-1 to the Beavers at halftime. In the second half, the Lady Wolverines tried to fight their way back but came up short falling to the Beavers 11-6. Sophomore Team Captain Rachael Odell lead the way scoring 4 goals, while fellow sophomore teammates Ashley Brown, and Tess Hurlburt added one apiece.
In the final game, the Lady Wolverines were determined to taste victory. In a battle for 3rd place in the Big 8 conference, The Lady Rams and the Lady Wolverines fought a long hard battle, but the Lady Wolverines were able to come out on top and defeat Fresno City 10-7. Leading the way was sophomore Jordan Meyer with 4 goals. Sophomore Ashley Brown, and freshman Angela Murphy each scored 2 goals, and sophomores Ja’mae Hurley and Tess Hurlburt helped the cause by contributing 1 goal apiece. Anchoring the defensive attack, freshman goalie Candace Timm had another stellar game with 10 blocks.
The Lady Wolverines are in action again this weekend as they compete at the Northern California Championships at San Mateo College. Seeded 4th, they will again square off against the Fresno City Rams on Friday, the #5 seed, with the winner advancing to Saturdays final round.
