One of wrestling’s elite programs. Wolverine wrestling, since 2007 alone, boasts six individual state champions and five Academic All-Americans, one state team championship (2007) and three state dual team titles, all under Head Coach Ken Wharry.
Former Sierra wrestler, Matt Gibson, earned the 2012 Big 12 Championship heavyweight title for Iowa State Univ. Summary
The Wolverines finished the 2011 season in impressive fashion. The team battled injuries and many line up changes all year long. The Wolverines qualified 9 wrestlers to the state meet but only competed with 7 at the state meet. Top contender Jesse Baldazo was competing with a badly injured knee and he still finished with an impressive 3rd place medal. Hwt. Gusev finished the season in 3rd place but not before beating 2 wrestlers who had beaten him at the regional and earlier in the state semi final match.
The top performances came from the three finalists 125 Auston Wulfert, 174 Dylin Rodriguez and 197 Jesus Chavez. Auston lost a very close and hard fought match in the finals. One of the most controversial matches of the night was at 197 when Jesus Chaves was called for 2 stalling calls at the end of the 3rd round which sent the match into overtime where he lost on a takedown on the edge of the mat. Dylin Rodriguez came back after a 5th place regional finish and wrestling with a hurt knee to finish 2nd place.
