The Sierra College soccer team got a first-hand look Tuesday at the competition that lies ahead in its quest for a state championship. A deep, athletic Fresno City team came into Rocklin yesterday and spent much of the season opener for both teams playing in the Sierra half of the field. The Rams headed back south with a 2-0 win that was the result of a superior level of early-season fitness and a seemingly endless bench.
Head coach Jason Gantt’s Wolverines showed they are a talented bunch, particularly on defense as they turned away numerous Ram scoring attempts. Freshman keeper Molly McConnell had a great game in holding the Rams to only a pair of goals. Alanna Greenhow had the best Sierra scoring chance as she separated from the Ram defense on a breakaway with a couple minutes left in the contest. Her shot from the left of the box went directly to Ram goalie Tara Togami.
Ram forward Skyler Cissel connected midway through the first and All-America candidate Jenna Thomason found the back of the net with 5:30 remaining.
The Wolverines head to the prestigious Ventura College Tournament tomorrow to take on nationally ranked Cypress College on 8/29 and Ventura College on 8/31. Next home game for Sierra is September 10 against the Knights from Shasta College.
