Project Unity/UMOJA Club - Komen Fundraiser, Race for the Cure
Event DetailsStudents on the Sierra College Rocklin Campus will host a Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Fundraiser, sponsored by the UMOJA Program and Project Unity Club. From April 9th through May 9th every Monday and Wednesday, the team donning the name "Princess Believers" will hold a $1 "Cupcakes and Kisses for the Cure" sale, in the campus quad. All donations go to the Susan G. Komen foundation to help find a cure for breast cancer.
The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® Series is the world's largest and most successful education and fundraising event for breast cancer ever created. For over 25 years, Komen for the Cure has played a critical role in every major advance in the fight against breast cancer. The Foundation has transformed the way the world talks about and treats this disease, helping to turn millions of breast cancer patients into breast cancer survivors.
The motto of the Princess Believers team is: "If you can believe in a princess, then you can believe in a cure!" Team member, Crystal, says "By supporting this fundraiser you are helping to raise money for a better future, a world where we will find a cure for a cancer that effects both women AND men. Let's put an end to breast cancer and eat a cupcake!"
Umoja (Swahili for "unity") is a state-wide program designed to help improve academic success rates for African American students. This program enables students to see themselves within a positive historical and cultural context that values the traditions, wisdom, accomplishments, suffering and perseverance from the past to positively impact their lives and community.
This includes seeing other people and ideas with the respect that is due to all cultures. The program is open to all students. The overall goal is to provide students with a wide variety of intentional and deliberate resources and tools to assist them in achieving their academic goals. This includes orientation, learning communities, individual counseling, conferences, workshops and campus tours. Project Unity is a student club whose members are involved in the UMOJA Program.
