Students Taking On Poverty - Locally
Event DetailsThe Sierra College chapter of the STOP Club (Students Taking On Poverty) is organizing a school supply drive for Auburn's EV Cain middle school. The school supplies drive will be held on May 1st and 2nd. All new school supplies for grades 6-8 are welcome and needed. Donated items can be dropped off between the hours of 11am and 2pm at the entrance of the Cafeteria, in the Campus Center, J Building, on the Rocklin Campus, located at 5000 Rocklin Road, in Rocklin.
The mission of the STOP Club is: To advocate and promote awareness of poverty and its effect on society. To be a resource for students interested in volunteering/service projects, advocacy and awareness of events globally, nationally and in our state and local communities.
According to the Club President, Holley Vallieres, "We are striving to begin at home; STOP Club has worked with organizations, charities, events, and endeavors to ensure that poverty is being challenged in our local neighborhoods. This club is an excellent way to get involved with local opportunities to assist others in need. In the past we have participated in events with organizations such as, WEAVE (Women Escaping A Violent Environment) and the Gathering Inn. This semester we are focusing on a school supply drive for E.V. Cain Middle School of Auburn. Inspired by those before us, the STOP Club here at Sierra College is walking in the footsteps of past students of Stanford University where this club originated. We enjoy being part of a larger conversation being held nationally and worldwide. We look forward to stepping up to the challenge and to inspire future generations to follow in our footsteps of limiting poverty in our communities."
The STOP Club meets on Tuesday's at 12:30 pm in the Campus Life Center, J-7.
