Robert Hanna’s great-great grandfather, John Muir came to California from Scotland via Wisconsin—in search of mighty mountains. Muir lived and worked in Yosemite and rapidly fell in love with the spectacular mountain system known as the Sierra Nevada. Muir’s eloquent writings inspired artists, photographers, authors and politicians to travel west to see what he called “the Range of Light” in California. John Muir went on to publish scores of articles and books that inspired the protection and conservation of forest and rivers—and parks like Yosemite, Sequoia and Yellowstone. His efforts, along with his newly-formed organization, the Sierra Club, launched the modern conservation movement, especially with regard to the protection and preservation of spectacular wild places.
Growing up in the long shadow of John Muir was his descendent, Robert Hanna. At first unwilling to accept his famous heritage, Robert kept his noteworthy kin in the back of his mind as he pursued his own career. Later in life his studies led him to learn more and to appreciate the significance of his very famous great-great grandfather.
Join Robert Hanna in a 90-minute illustrated presentation about his experiences growing up as a Muir.
Robert will briefly review the history of John Muir and then share what it was like growing up as children, grand-children and eventually great-grandchildren of “John of the Mountains.” Robert will share unique family stories as well as seldom-seen photographs of Muir.
This especially intimate view of one of California’s most famous personalities will immediately precede a play by professional actor Lee Stetson, “Muir Among the Animals” on the same evening. The combination of a private view of John Muir and a delightful play by famed actor Lee Stetson will make for a very enjoyable evening—both at Sierra College’s Rocklin Campus.
