The educational success that the award of an Associate degree represents demonstrates considerable sacrifice, hard work and commitment.

The ceremony itself takes place once a year at the end of the Spring semester. All students who complete a degree in either Fall, Spring or Summer of that academic year are eligible to attend. You must have submitted a degree petition to the Admissions & Records Office by the appropriate deadline. Participation in commencement does not guarantee a degree. During March you will receive information about the ceremony and must complete an additional participation form if you wish to attend. The College bookstore will have caps, gowns and tassels available for purchase.

There is not a limit to the number of guests that you can invite to the outdoor ceremony, but if it rains heavily the ceremony will be canceled and not rescheduled (at the Rocklin Campus).

Commencement Day Traffic Announcement, Rocklin – In an effort to assist in getting you and your families out of the parking lots, Sierra College Security and the Rocklin Police Department will be directing both pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
Friendly Fallout 1953

Ann Ronald, English Professor, University of Nevada, Reno

Ann Ronald's book, Friendly Fallout 1953, combines factual
history of atomic tests in the Nevada desert with fictional vignettes
that explore the impact of the tests on the people who participated in
them as well as the civilian down winders. Told through the perspectives
of military personnel, scientists, ranchers, and others, the stories
bring to life a turbulent era when Cold War fears, patriotism,
scientific ambition, and popular excitement often collided with the
welfare of ordinary citizens and the environment. Ronald evokes the
explosions in all their terrifying magnificence and explores the
diverse, sometimes conflicting, emotions of a generation that saw atomic
energy as its best protection against the horrors of another world war,
even to the sacrifice of innocent people, wildlife and livestock.

About Ann Ronald: Ann Ronald grew up in the Pacific Northwest. From the first seminar
paper she wrote, her dissertation, the first article she ever published,
her first book, her last book and all the articles in between, Ronald’s
work has always focused on landscape.

Graduating from Whitman College and then the University of Colorado,
she managed to survive away from the West long enough to complete her
PhD at Northwestern University in 1970 (she promised herself she would
never live east of the Rockies again and she’s kept her vow). Ronald
found a job at the University of Nevada, Reno, as soon as she finished
graduate school and has worked at UNR ever since, first as an English
professor, later as dean of the College of Arts and Science, and now as
an English professor again. Ann teaches a variety of British and
American literature courses. Partial retirement means she only teaches
during the spring semesters, but she regularly offers a graduate seminar
in Creative Nature Writing as well as undergraduate courses such as
Western American Writers, Major Environmental Texts, Western Women
Writers and American Autobiography.

Ann Ronald was named UNR's Outstanding Researcher in 2005. She was
elected to the Nevada Writers Hall of Fame in 2006. Despite her active
professional career, Ann Ronald has never given up her enthusiasm for
landscape and the out-of-doors. She recently backpacked in the High
Sierra and hiked hut-to-hut in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. She
plans more such high-country trips.

Lee Stetson—The Tramp and the Roughrider

Back by popular demand is this lively reenactment of the famous 1903 meeting of President Theodore Roosevelt and California naturalist, John Muir. Returning to Sierra College for his annual “Muir visit” during Earth Day week, Lee will bring Teddy (Alan Sutterfield) along and perform this popular historical play (written and directed by Lee Stetson).

In May of 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt, planning a tour of the western forests, invited the naturalist John Muir to a four-day camping trip in the Yosemite wilderness. The Tramp and the Roughrider illuminates this extraordinary encounter, with the action unfolding at sunset on Glacier Point, overlooking the magnificent Yosemite Valley.

Both of these characters were feisty and opinionated, and had sharp disagreements on issues like hunting, animal rights, and forest management. Muir’s poetic and evangelistic temperament, clashing with Roosevelt’s political (and boyish) enthusiasms, naturally spawned both tension and humor. Both skillful storytellers, it seems natural that both would seek to top one another by relating some of their many adventures in the American wildernes. Whether you’re a naturalist, a sports-man, or both, you will be captivated by this passionate performance by Lee Stetson as John Muir and Alan Sutterfield as Theodore Roosevelt.

Tickets are available at the door or send self-addressed stamped envelope and check payable to Sierra College Museum, to Muir Play Tickets c/o Richard Hilton, Sewell Hall, Sierra College, 5000 Rocklin Road, Rocklin, CA 95677

All proceeds benefit the Sierra College Natural History Museum.

There is a $2 parking fee on campus. Parking permits are available at dispensers located in the parking lots.

Dr. David Wright and Joseph Stewart of the California Department of Fish and Game have been peering into rock crevices in the northern Sierra Nevada and beyond to see whether the American pika may be affected by climate change. Arguably the cutest animal in the state, the pika lives at high elevations and is thought to be sensitive to warming. As with a lot of science, their study has been raising many new questions.

All proceeds benefit the Sierra College Natural History Museum.

There is a $2 parking fee on campus. Parking permits are available at dispensers located in the parking lots.

A Prehistoric Safari to the American Southwest

Frank L. DeCourten, Professor of Earth Science, Sierra College

This lecture will explore the new discoveries and
interpretation that are profoundly changing our views of the dinosaur
assemblages that populated in the southwestern North America for more than 180
million years. The non-technical and profusely illustrated presentation will
provide descriptions and renderings of recently identified dinosaurs, some of
which are completely new to science. The first skeletons were unearthed in
western North America in the late 1800s. Since that time, our knowledge of the
great prehistoric reptiles has grown dramatically. Nonetheless, persistent gaps in the fossil
record and the imperfect preservation of dinosaur remains has left considerable
gaps in our understanding of the community structure, life habits, and patterns
of evolution among the dinosaurs that populated the West during Mesozoic times.
Beginning in the mid-1980s, a series of dramatic new discoveries were made in
Utah and adjacent regions that have transformed our understanding of dinosaurs
in the American Southwest and opened new vistas into the vanished world they
occupied.
