Dr. Shazhad Anwar
Dr. Shazhad Anwar is a family physician practicing at Kaiser Permanente in the Los Angeles area.
Dr. Anwar grew up in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England. He moved to Roseville, California in 2000 where he began his education at Sierra College as an economics major. After receiving some sound advice he changed his major to medicine. Dr. Anwar said, “All I knew while starting at Sierra was that I enjoyed helping others and I needed something that would challenge me. Choosing a job and a career is one of the most difficult things to do; especially during high school when life experience is minimal. Initially I was intent on pursing a degree in economics and helping a developing economy grow. I even tutored economics while I was at Sierra, but eventually I realized that sound economic theory is often ignored in favor of political policy. This didn’t change my desire to help people but it did change my focus from a community to the individual. After several internships during my freshman year at Sierra I confirmed all my goals could be met with a career in medicine.”
Dr. Anwar transferred from Sierra College in 2002 to U.C. Davis where he earned a bachelor’s of science degree in 2004. From there, he transferred to St. Georges University where he earned his medical degree in 2008.
Dr. Anwar said, “One of the best things about Sierra College is the quality of education you receive. The faculty and staff are very personable and the class sizes are small.”
When asked what the best part of being a doctor was Dr. Anwar responded, “Being part of the health field affords many great opportunities and variety such as the ability to work with people from all types of backgrounds.” He would like to eventually combine his desire to explore the world with his medical skills and be able to use medicine in an international setting.
His advice to current students is, “Choosing the right career is difficult so get some experience before you choose your future. Once you find what’s right for you just go for it! You will enjoy the journey so much more.”
