Sierra College Baseball
2009 Sierra College Baseball ends its season
in the State Elite 8
The Sierra College Wolverines are the only team in California to appear in the Elite 8 for 4 straight years.
Two of those trips ended in Final Four appearances and one
State Championship in 2008!
The 2009 Sierra College baseball team went deeper in the post-season than many experts figured them to go. As the #12 seed in Northern California they ended the season of #5 seed Fresno City College and defeated #3 seed Feather River College and #4 seed College of San Mateo. The Wolverines eventually lost to Delta College thus ending their season with 31 victories and their forth consecutive trip to the State Elite 8.

2009 Season Preview
The 2008 Sierra College Baseball season is gone but not forgotten. In 2008, the Wolverine baseball team accomplished something most teams can only dream about. They captured the California Community College State Baseball Championship! The philosophy of this program has always been to live in the “present”, so 2008 is now history.
The 2009 season will again be a grind from opening day to the finish. Sierra competes in what many consider the toughest baseball conference in California, the Big 8 Conference. Last year 7 of the 8 teams made the 16 team playoff field. The 2009 Wolverine team will look much different from the experienced group of ’08. There will be many new faces and youth will be expected to play well. The returning leaders will be catchers Chris Cottingham, and Ben Schwefel. Middle infielders Alex Anicich, Matt Foat and Keith Jennette will anchor the defense and newcomer transfer from Creighton University, 3B Joe Bonfe and red-shirt freshman Gio Rios will be expected to hold down the hot corner. At firstbase will be two veterans in Derek Eid and Long Beach State transfer Ted Lemasters. The entire 2008 outfield is gone and must be replaced. The players expected to perform out there are, Abel Alcantar, Tyler Dewitt, Kareem Edwards, Max Gordon, Nicko Garibay and Sam Montgomery.
The pitching staff is where the Wolverines lost the most. Gone are State Championship MVP and ’08 All American Cameron Ray (Sonoma State), set-up man Brian Garber (Chico State) and closer Josh Crockett (Kansas State). Their #3 starter Tyler Graham (University of Nevada) is also gone. The returnees will be the #2 starter from a year ago Jeremy Cole and bullpen sensation Jesse Garcia. They also return experience in Dustin Stoddard (1-0 in ’08, McKenzie White, Scott Tully, and Chris Johnson. Newcomers with expectations are Jake Morton (transfer from UC Irvine), Paul Jinkens (transfer from Sacramento State), Mike Garber (red-shirt in 2008), Morgan Yee, Cole Saunders and Ryan Guzman who played on the 2006 Final Four team and has battle injuries since then.
The fall season indicated the Wolverines have some decent talent which led to some good days and some bad days, but the biggest question in 2009 will be the pitching staff. With large numbers doesn’t come automatic success. The staff will consist of 17 pitchers and many question marks.
Pitching Coach Josh Morton enters his 7th season with Sierra and like always will work his magic and get the Wolverine pitchers prepared and ready to compete and win! The baseball facility has undergone a tremendous facelift and the fans should be treated to a much better view of the game as there are now new bleachers with a net backstop. The team fund raised thousands of dollars and installed a brand new Bermuda sod infield.
We look forward to seeing everyone in Rocklin this spring.
