Boots to Books Video

New America Media has done a video on our Boots to Books program.

Editor's Note: When they return home, one of the first places many Iraq and Afghanistan vets turn is not the Department of Veterans Affairs, but to their local community college or university. Over 300,000 post-9/11 veterans are already using their GI Bill to attend school, and a tidal wave of at least 500,000 more is expected when a newer, expanded education benefit takes effect this fall. Because veterans have spent recent years at war rather than in school, the vast majority land at community colleges. Sierra College's Boots to Books program, outside of Sacramento, houses one of California's only programs to help vets succeed in college. NAM video producer Mike Siv and NAM contributor Aaron Glantz offer this look at what schools can do to help veterans make the difficult transition from combat to civilian life.

Our Mission Statement

The members of Veteran Student Alliance (V.S.A.) are committed to the club, our Veterans, and the public. We are here to outreach and identify the needs and future goals of in-coming Veterans; providing every individual who seeks guidance, the resources and knowledge to accomplish any task.

V.S.A. will show members a new sense of family and cohesion. New members will be welcomed into our band of brothers and sisters. As a group, we will give those who have joined a feeling of energy, support, knowledge, and excitement to face tomorrow’s challenges.

As V.S.A. grows in members and years, we promise to continue sharing ideas and always decide what is best for the club, no matter an individual’s position or affiliation to the organization. We will help all Veterans and members understand the challenges and changes of lifestyle that will be faced during transition, but as a unit, these challenges can be faced and conquered.

V.S.A. must lead by example and present ourselves in an approachable manner; defending all ideas and taking on new members and challenges with a firm embrace.

We are not serpents presenting apples; nor will we make promises we can’t keep. There are no dictators; instead, we are a light for the lost and/or found. We will be a friend to our fellow Veterans and will present direction to form solutions for hard times.

Our doors are open and shall never close. This is Sierra College’s Veteran Student Alliance.
