COVID-19 Updates

Fall 2020 Information

  • All Sierra College campuses and location are only open to students taking specific labs/specialty courses and essential personnel

  • Sierra College remains operational via remote delivery for the majority of instruction and student services

  • Those visiting a Sierra College campus are required to:
    • Wear appropriate face covering
    • Maintain social distancing of six feet or more
    • Complete health screening in the Sierra College app
    • Check in to each building and room entered, using QR code in the Sierra College App
  • The majority of  our lecture  courses will be delivered online via Canvas through fall 2020.  
  • Some labs/specialty courses will be held on our campuses. Students participating in those respective classes will receive direct communication on safety protocols. 
  • Student services are being delivered remotely in fall 2020.    
  • Please check your mySierra email inbox and Canvas for additional information about your respective courses, and to stay in touch with faculty and your support network. 

Visitors to all Sierra College locations must participate in health screening via the Sierra College App. If you do not have access to the App, please contact your instructor, counselor, or dean/manager for alternative methods of accessing campus. 

Fall 2020 athletics have been shifted to spring by the California Community College Athletic Association. 
Student clubs and activities will meet remotely for fall 2020. Information related to specific clubs is available in the Campus Clubs section of the Sierra College App and Sierra College website.
Dorms are closed for fall 2020.

In conjunction with advice from local and state agencies and to ensure the safety of students, faculty, and staff within the Sierra College community, on campus events are canceled or postponed for fall 2020.

Parking passes are not required in general lots for fall 2020. 
Student employees will continue working remotely, if possible, for fall 2020.

What is Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19)?

Coronaviruses are a large group of viruses that are common among animals and humans. In rare cases, animal coronaviruses can be transmitted from animals to humans. This novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19 is a newly discovered coronavirus that has not been previously detected in animals or humans. The source of this virus is not yet known.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

Typically, human coronaviruses cause mild-to-moderate respiratory illness. Symptoms are very similar to the flu, including:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Fatigue
  • Malaise
  • Muscle aches
  • Shortness of breath
  • Loss of taste or smell
  • Congestion
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Diarrhea

In some cases, COVID-19 can cause more severe respiratory illness.

How is COVID-19 diagnosed?

Health care providers will assess patients, and if COVID-19 is a possible diagnosis, they will do further testing.  If a patient is suspected to be infected with novel coronavirus, public health agencies will work with health care providers to ensure testing can be completed. 

What is the treatment for COVID-19?

Most people with illnesses due to common coronavirus infections recover on their own; there are no specific treatments for coronavirus infections. For patients who are more severely ill, hospitals can provide supportive care. We are continuing to learn more about this novel coronavirus and treatment may change over time. 

What can the public do to limit the spread of COVID-19?

The California Department of Public Health recommends the following steps to prevent the spread of all respiratory viruses:

  • Stay at least six feet from people.
  • Wear a face covering whenever leaving home, in public areas and buildings.
  • Wash hands with soap and water. 
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. 
  • Stay away from work, school or other people if you become sick with any symptoms similar to COVID.
