Impacting Lives...

Kelly FitzgeraldA few years ago, as a single mother of three children, juggling work, family, and school, I made the decision to pursue a career in nursing by attending Sierra College. It has not been an easy journey. Sierra’s Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN) program is challenging—which is also why it’s one of the best in the state. Nonetheless, I look forward with anticipation of joining the hundreds of Sierra alumni nurses now working in Placer County hospitals among the best and brightest in their field.

Recently, something pretty remarkable happened to me: I began the second half of this rigorous program with peace of mind as the recipient of the Erna Brown Endowed Scholarship. With the help of this scholarship, I now have the opportunity to focus on my top two priorities: school and family.

The breadth of experiences and opportunities I’ve had at Sierra—and the support of my professors, classmates and community members like you—encourages me to take on my next challenge: this Spring, I’m taking classes simultaneously at Sierra College and Sacramento State University as part of an innovative ADN to BSN Collaborative merger. This program enables students to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in 3 years; I’ll be graduating in December 2018!

The impact of my Sierra College experience, and scholarship support, has inspired me to pledge my own gift to the Sierra College Foundation in the future—to help students in similar situations obtain the comprehensive education that Sierra College provides, including challenging academics inside the classroom and imparting the value of being a well-rounded individual that contributes to society.

I am writing now to share why a gift to the Sierra College Foundation is so important, and to ask you to join others, like Erna Brown, in supporting the Sierra educational experience with a contribution of your own.

Your gift strengthens our community by facilitating the training of tomorrow’s public service heroes. Thank you for taking the time to read my letter and for making your gift of today!
