Meet Robyn Morgan, Early Childhood Development Major at Nevada County Campus (NCC)

Robyn sits by the pond at the Nevada County Campus
What’s your major?
My major is early childhood development.
What do you want to do with it?
I want to be a kindergarten teacher. I’m also thinking about special education.
What inspired you to do this?
I guess I had a lot of siblings. My parents remarried, and they had really young kids. Also, my stepmom is a second-grade teacher, and so I feel really comfortable with kids. I feel like I can make a difference and help them. And I think I can handle them. I will have more fun with little kids than I would as a middle or high school teacher.
Do you have any experience working with kids at Sierra College?
Not yet. I’m trying to get my general education out of the way. I do have a one-year-and-a-half-year-old daughter. I want to try to be done with college by the time she’s ready for school so I can have the same schedule as her.
I think that would be really great because I’m a server right now. I work nights, and I always work weekends. Once my daughter is in school, I won’t have time with her! So I want to get my classes out of the way.
What do you like about Sierra?
I really like the students. I think everyone is super friendly and nice. There is so much access here for help, like the library and computer labs. And I like the flexibility of the class times.
Do you take a lot of morning classes?
We have a communications class at eight o’clock in the morning. I was the most nervous about that class, but now it’s my favorite, which is funny. And then I have a night class from six to nine. My schedule really helps with my day. I can go to school before my daughter wakes up, then I can have all day with her before I come in the evening when she’s in bed.
Do you plan on getting a BA?
I was talking with my counselor, and she said I can transfer straight into Chico. Their Early Childhood Development Program is a really good. We’re thinking about moving to Chico when I transfer.
Where is your favorite place to hang out on Nevada County Campus?
I love the pond! I feel like NCC is one of the nicer campuses. And you get a good workout when you park and walk up the stairs!
What is the best job you’ve ever had, and what was the worst?
Oh my gosh, it’s the same job! I’m a server, and it is the best because it is shorter hours and you get to make cash tips. But, it’s also the worst because it drains you emotionally. It causes me anxiety.
I’ve worked in customer service for so long. People have problems, and you have to accommodate them. It can get really stressful and crazy sometimes. The whole time you’re working you just want to leave and not be stressed. Then you count your money, and you can go home and not think about it until the next time you work!
I hope being a teacher will be the best job!
I think it will still be a service, but I’ll actually feel like I’m helping somebody!
Last question is a fun one: There is a new crayon being made. What color would you be?
Well, I would say orange, but they have that already! Maybe I’d be purple actually. I feel like orange used to be my color. Then I had my daughter, and all the sudden purple became my new favorite color.
To me, my daughter just seems like purple! I don’t know why. So I feel like I was orange and more bright and outgoing. Then I got a little more calm with a nice purple color.

Thanks Robyn, we wish you the best of luck in your Early Childhood Development Program!
