Sierra College Names Erik Skinner to Serve as Vice President of Administrative Services

The Sierra College Board of Trustees at its December board meeting appointed Erik Skinner as the new Vice President of Administrative Services (VPA).A recognized leader in the California Community Colleges system, Mr. Skinner most recently served as Deputy Chancellor for the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office. At Sierra College, he will provide strategic direction and manage fiscal services, security, and facilities.

“I am very excited to be joining Sierra College, an institution recognized for its quality instruction and deep commitment to student-centered innovation.” Erik commented, “During my time in the State Chancellor’s Office, I was impressed with the great work of the faculty, staff, and administrators at Sierra College. Now, I look forward to using my skills and experience to support the college’s ambitious efforts to serve its students and community.”

Erik has had an impressive career, working at the forefront of educational reform and serving in a number of important roles. At the State Chancellor’s Office over the years, he served as Vice Chancellor for College Finance and Facilities Planning and even Acting Chancellor prior to selection of the current Chancellor for the California Community Colleges system. In these roles, he oversaw, among other areas, the Finance, Facilities, Student Services, and Academic Affairs  divisions, providing oversight and support to the system’s 114 colleges which enroll 2.1 million students.

Superintendent/President Willy Duncan explained, “His depth of knowledge of the community college system and his solid experience leading the fiscal services operations of the Chancellor’s Office will be of great benefit to the college and the community.  ”

After acquiring a Bachelor’s degree in history from Grinnell College and a Master’s in Public Policy from the University of Michigan, he worked as a Fiscal and Policy Analyst for the California Legislative Analyst’s Office (LAO) and as the Assistant Secretary for Fiscal Policy in the Office of the Secretary of Education.

Throughout his impressive career Erik has forged strong working relationships with the Governor’s Office, the Department of Finance, Legislature, Legislative Analyst’s Office, and other key stakeholders. He brings strong working partnerships with system stakeholders including the State Academic Senate, the State Student Senate, the Community College League of California, and the Association of Chief Business Officials. Additionally, he has been a passionate advocate to state and national elected officials about the importance of the community college mission, college access, student success, and institutional effectiveness.
