Three Sierra Athletic Teams to be honored with Statewide Awards

The California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) has selected three of Sierra’s Women’s Athletic Teams to receive their prestigious Scholar Team Recipients award to be presented on March 28 at their convention. Women’s Softball, Volleyball and Basketball teams were selected for 2016-17. This is a special award as it emphasizes academic achievement of all the members of multiple teams.

“Sierra College Athletics has long emphasized not just success on the field or court, but also in the classroom,” said Roz Goldenberg Athletic Director and Dean of Kinesiology, “Our athletes across the board have routinely academically outperformed their classmates.”

The teams being honored by the CCCAA did exceptionally well in the classroom with women’s Basketball and  women’s Softball having an average GPA of 3.3 and women’s Volleyball having a 3.45.  At the same time they also have outstanding season records. Women’s Basketball were Big Eight champions and posted a 26-4 record. Women’s Softball finished their 2017 season 35-10 and was a northern California play-off participant. Women’s Volleyball won the Big Eight, posted a 21-6 record and finished 5th in State.

In a letter announcing the award Carlyle Carter, CCCAA President/CEO stated, “This is a special award as it emphasizes academic achievement of all members of multiple teams. This is an honor that should be the objective of all of our sports teams and one for which you should be extremely proud.”
