Patrons Honors Our Local Veterans While Exploring Sierra College Veteran's Services Programs

In honor of Veterans Day, The Sierra College Patrons, a support group of the Sierra College Foundation, invites the public and those in the community interested in learning more about how Sierra College Veteran's Services programs are helping returning military personnel transition to civilian life, to attend their November 2, 2015 meeting, which will feature a presentation by Sierra College Veterans Counselor Blake Rood and a tour of the campus Veterans Center.

The Sierra College Veterans Center is focused on helping returning veterans to make the transition from military to academic life by providing hands on assistance through learning communities and veteran-specific events.

Boots to Books is a specialized course created to prepare returning veterans for the transition to higher education. The program provides an overview of college terms, student practices, the transfer process, and degree/certificate requirements. Students are guided in the formation of an educational plan to increase their chances for success in reaching their academic goals. Additionally, information is provided on GI Bill benefits, financial aid, VA compensation/pension claims, combat stress injuries, and available resources to ease the transition back to civilian life. Most of all, participants regain the sense of camaraderie to which service members are accustomed.

The meeting will be held on Monday, November 2 from 12:30–2:30 p.m. at the Sierra College Rocklin Campus in the Fireside Room located in the Campus Center (Building J). Lunch (which is optional) will be served at 12:30. The cost of the lunch is $11 and requires an RSVP. Please call Joan Edwards at 916-663-3408 by October 28, 2015. A tour of the Veterans Center will follow the luncheon and presentation by Ms. Morris.

About the Sierra College Patrons

Formed in 1984, the Patrons provide financial support to the Arts and Humanities departments at Sierra College providing $5,000 in grants each year. Grants are designed to directly affect students as much as possible. In addition, a $500 scholarship is awarded annually to a student in the arts including Music, Art and Drama. Three small awards of $50 each recognize outstanding students competing in the annual student art show. Further grants may be awarded during the year to enhance the services offered by academic departments. Since its inception, the Patrons Club has donated more than $275,000 to Sierra College affecting and improving all aspects of campus life.

Sierra College Rocklin Campus is located at 5000 Rocklin Road, Rocklin, California 95677. There is a $3 parking fee on campus. Parking permits are available at machines located in each parking lot.
