The Sierra College Ridley Gallery presents Catastrophe, Crisis and Other Family Traditions. This exhibition of photography by Jessamyn Lovell showcases a ten-year project documenting the struggles Lovell's family has dealt with on a small farm in rural Upstate New York, following Lovell's move to the West Coast. A "personal documentation of an American family struggling with class, identity, and disability", Catastrophe, Crisis, and Other Family Traditions records the daily lives of Lovell's sisters, adopted brother, and mother, amidst hardship and tragedy, while ultimately transcending many of these circumstances. The project conveys a complex set of familial relationships, including the guilt of self-preservation, and the longing to go home regardless of the circumstances one may find there.

Jessamyn Lovell (b. 1977, Syracuse, NY) is a visual artist working with photography, video, and surveillance as tools to document her own life experiences making connections between class and personal identity. BFA, Rochester Institute of Technology and MFA, California College of the Arts Lovell lives in Albuquerque, NM where she is currently a Lecturer in the Art and Art History Department at the University of New Mexico.
