Sierra College Guardian Scholars Program thanks the RANN Organization for their generous donation. On November 18, 2015, RANN held their annual Make, Bake, or Fake luncheon and fundraiser. The net result of all their hard work was a donation of over $12,000 that will benefit former foster youth students under the Guardian Scholars Program.

Some might think RANN is a social club, and that’s right but they also have a charitable mission. Each year RANN selects two charities in which to donate their gifts of funds, services, and tangible items. This year the Board selected Sierra College’s Guardian Scholars Program.

“I had no idea what to expect but as I entered the ballroom at the Timbers Lodge of Sun City Roseville, the room was a buzz of activity and excitement,’ said Dr. Linda Williams, Financial Aid Program Manager for Sierra College. “They had tables and tables of various types of fundraising activities. There were chances to win dozens of beautiful fresh baked goods, along with handcrafted and specially purchased items for the event. Make, Bake, or Fake fits the theme! Attendees participated in a silent auction, raffle drawings, chance to win the Wall of Wine, and ended with the live auction. You could tell that those in attendance were passionate about the need to lift up our former foster youth wishing to attend Sierra College. I was humbled and honored to tell those in attendance about our program and goals.”

The Guardian Scholars Program provides services to identified and verified current or former foster youth attending Sierra College. The goal is to equip and empower Guardian Scholars with post-secondary education and self-efficacy through student support services and to navigate the barriers that can affect success.

In 2014, Sierra College decided to update its Student Equity Plan to ensure that groups historically underrepresented in higher education have an equal opportunity for access, success, and transfer. Former Foster Youth were shown to need the most intervention and assistance in all areas reviewed. The adoption of the Guardian Scholars program is the result.
