Back on February 14, 2013, Sierra College participated in the transnational movement, One Billion Rising, to help bring an end to the violence against women and children. On that day, over one billion people worldwide rose up, including hundreds of members of Sierra’s students, staff and faculty. The group came together in the Rocklin Campus quad to show solidarity and gather resource information. We called it Sierra Rise Up! On Tuesday, February 16 from 12:00-12:30, the campus community will once again “Rise Up!” to bring to light the prevalence of violence against women and children that exists right here in our local communities.

Immediately following the “Rise Up!” event, the first of two showings of the documentary film, The Hunting Ground will be presented in the Dietrich Theatre on the Rocklin Campus, from 12:35 – 1:50 pm.

The Hunting Ground is a documentary film about alleged incidents of rape on college campuses in the United States. Written and directed by Kirby Dick and produced by Amy Ziering, it premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. The film was released in February 2015 and an edited version aired on CNN in October 2015. The documentary focuses on Andrea Pino and Annie E. Clark, two former University of North Carolina students who said that they were raped while enrolled in school and led a campaign to file a Title IX complaint against UNC.

The second showing of the film will be presented at 7:00 pm in the Dietrich Theatre, with a panel of educational, legal and law enforcement experts to lead a discussion with community members immediately afterword. The film viewing is free and the public is welcome and encouraged to attend. There is a $3 parking fee on campus. Permits can be purchased at machines located in the parking lots.
