Sierra College Announces New Logo and Branding

Sierra College logoAfter nearly two years of research and development, Sierra Community College in Northern California launched a new branding strategy on Thursday, marking the most significant change in its visual identity in four decades.

"We've had the same logo since the 1970s, so it was time to refresh," said President William Duncan, "to reflect who we are now and where we're going.”

The new logo honors the Sierra College heritage--as a part of the communities it has served since 1936--while pointing to the next phase of its evolution: forward-looking innovation to ensure that the college rises to meet the needs of students as they prepare for tomorrow’s workforce.

Sierra is often first in the State to adopt new technologies and make changes to best serve its students and communities. “Today we’re accelerating our efforts," said Duncan. "For example, students need to be prepared for a job market that's changing drastically. We are tackling this challenge head on by transforming our institution to provide pathways that will help guide them and provide support programs that will help them succeed.”

'Sierra Rising' is the name of the new logo. Designed and implemented by the Sierra College Marketing Department, it shows a bold S rising from the Sierra Nevada mountain range which dominates the Sierra College District. The mountain base, strong and broad is like the foundation of a Sierra education. The rising peaks imagine the goals reached at the summit. Sierra’s commitment is to provide the pathways that will help them climb. The logo’s simple and definitive lines reflect a promise: timeless and enduring, like its namesake, Sierra College rises.

The branding identity effort emerged in part from interviews with students, community members, business leaders, faculty and staff. In their words, Sierra was most described as: a leader in higher education and workforce development; entrepreneurial in its thinking; committed to the communities it serves and open to all; having an active, engaging environment that empowers students to thrive.

The new identity goes well beyond the logo. It will be used throughout the institution--from business cards to banners, with a new palette of colors and fonts. Over the months of 2017, the new identity will be unveiled as the college redesigns the website to encompass the new look and feel, while significantly improving the user experience.
