Why/How She Teaches:

  • I still remember my first day in community college. I had been out of high school for a number of years and I was nervous diving into my first accounting class to get my accounting certificate. I had a job and I was a single mom to two small children. I learned time management skills early and with great sacrifice, I was able to graduate with an AA degree. I understand the struggles students go through to pursue their dreams. I also know the importance of having an instructor who is encouraging and willing to be a mentor. I had a few of those instructors in my graduate and undergraduate programs and they helped me shape my goals and accomplishments. I would like to give back to my students what was given to me.
  • I thought that I had found my passion working as an auditor in a CPA firm, but I was given the opportunity to recruit for my firm at career fairs for CSU and UC campuses. I started talking with students and found their situations to be like mine in college. I found that I was giving students advice on classes, instructors, and career paths. I realized that my true passion was working with students. I left public accounting to pursue a teaching career.
  • I always encourage students to come to me if they have questions about their classwork or their future career path. There is nothing more heartbreaking to me than to have a student quietly struggle and not do well because they are afraid to talk to the instructor. I am available during office hours, by appointment, or by email.
  • I use technology in my classes with Canvas and Connect (online assignment submission). Connect gives students the opportunity to submit homework and get instant feedback on how they are doing. Students also have the opportunity to correct their mistakes and resubmit for a better grade.
  • I provide many tools for students to succeed (practice worksheets, online problems, LearnSmart (interactive program through Connect to help understand the textbook content), and lecture slides posted online. If you attend class, utilize the tools I give to you, and ask questions, you should be successful in my class.
