Event Details

Event held at Sierra CollegeBy Robert Hanna

There are more schools, parkways and places named for John Muir than any other historic figure in California and he is probably California’s most memorable conservationist. He inspired tens of thousands to “climb the mountains and get their good tidings.” A Scottish immigrant to Wisconsin in 1848, Muir walked a thousand miles to the Gulf of Mexico in search of nature’s teachings. In 1868 he ended up in California, and from there, the rest is a remarkable and memorable story. Known to many as the “apostle of the wilds”, Muir wrote 10 complete books and scores of magazine articles about California, Alaska and the wild places of the world. A tireless advocate of wilderness and the preservation of such, his words and efforts remain palpable throughout California and the world.

Robert Hanna is the great-great-grandson of the famous “wild man of Yosemite.” His presentation reviews the history of Muir himself, as well as how the Muir legacy was woven into the fabric of Hanna’s upbringing. Legends, stories and principles abounded in the long line of Muir descents – continuing on today, more than a century after Muir’s death. Hanna’s illustrated presentation brings the audience up to date – including how his great-great-grandfather influenced his own efforts in protecting public lands and working towards making outdoor places accessible and available to everyone. Numerous books by Muir and others about him will be available for purchase. Hanna’s presentation will include a cameo appearance by actor Lee Stetson of Yosemite, renowned scholar and expert impersonator of John Muir. Tickets prices are General Admission: $15, Student/Seniors: $10. Tickets will be available at the door 1 hour before curtain call or in advance through Brown Paper Tickets.
