Intellectual Salons are interactive discussions led by faculty and staff

Event Details

Continuing with the topic of “fear” the salons will address four separate issues in which students, staff and the public are invited to participate. Salons are led by “provocateurs” – faculty and staff who can lead interactive discussions on topics of interest to Sierra College students, staff and the regional public. Participants are invited to share their experiences and to engage in the discussions

Dr. Michelle Laird, Assoc. Professor, Psychology and Clinical Psychologist: "Public speaking, heights, and spiders: When Fear Becomes Phobia"

In the first (September 13) salon, Professor Michelle Laird says, “Have we conditioned ourselves to fear or has fear been conditioned into us? In this salon, we will explore the current research regarding phobias, the theories surrounding how phobias originate and what treatment methods have been shown to be most effective. We will also differentiate phobias from other fears and review some of the more common (and uncommon) phobias.”

All Intellectual Salons take place from 12:30-1:50pm on the second floor of the Learning Resources Building (Library) on the Rocklin Campus. The salons are free and open to the public.

The Fall Semester Intellectual Salons are as follows:

  • October 17 / Tuesday - Dr. Kathleen Taylor, Professor, Psychology and Chair, Women's Studies: "Gendering of Fear: Learning How to be Afraid"
  • November 14 / Tuesday - Jay Blake, USMC, Student Services Technician; Maria Brannan, USN, Student; Blake Rood, Veterans Center Counselor, Sierra College Veterans Success Center: "Fear: On the Battlefield and After"
  • November 28 / Tuesday - Blair Spaulding and Corey Morgan, Administration of Justice Department: "Managing Fear in Fearsome Situations"
