2018 INTELLECTUAL SALON SERIES

Events at Sierra

Sierra College’s Library in Rocklin continues its spring 2019 Intellectual Salon Series.  This year’s series is titled, Explorations of struggles of homelessness. The third salon is titled The Faraway Brothers, Unaccompanied, undocumented minors. An intimate discussion with Author Lauren Markham. The discussion will take place in the Stacks Cafe on the second floor of the Rocklin Campus Library, at 11:00 am on Thursday, April 11th. The event is FREE and all are welcome to listen and participate.

The book, Far Away Brothers, recounts the story of two young twin brothers who flee El Salvador and immigrate to America with hopes of a safer, better life.

Lauren Markham's book, The Far Away Brothers, was awarded the Ridenhour Book Prize, the Northern California Book Award, and the California Book Award Silver Prize. It was also a Fall 2017 Barnes and Noble Discover Great New Writers Selection, Longlisted for the Pen America literacy Award in Biography, shortlisted for the J. Anthony Lukas Book Prize and the L.A. Times Book Prize, and a Top Critic's Pick of 2017 by the New York Times.

Sierra College professors function as provocateurs and pathfinders in the intellectual salons. Providing basic information, they set the stage for free-flowing discussions based on the specific topic of the month.  Professors provide resources and expertise while participants share their knowledge, thoughts, and experiences relative to the topic.

Intellectual salons are free and open to all. Although the discussion is free, there is a $3 parking fee on campus. Permits can be purchased from the dispensers located throughout the parking lots.
