Event Details

The Sierra College Ridley Gallery is pleased to present Hero Reduction, an exhibition of work by John Baca and Matthew Gottschalk. The combined works focus on notions of heroism as represented in toys commonly marketed to young boys. While action figures play central roles in both artist’s work, the media and themes are handled in distinctly different ways. Baca’s work consists of a series of life-sized photographs supplemented by smaller images of female action figures, while Gottschalk's work consists of sculpture and site-specific paintings. These artists invite the viewer to consider what is implied by these representations and the world that bred them, thematically centered on gender and identity in contemporary pop culture.
