Course Changes

Be in the Know Before Registering for Classes

Sierra College is rolling out various course changes beginning Summer 2025. Some of the changes, such as new course numbering, are tied to California legislation to help benefit students. If you have any questions about the course changes, we encourage you to book an appointment to meet with your academic counselor.

Math Course Changes

Math 27, 29 and 30 Modifications

Beginning in Summer 2025, Sierra College will no longer be requiring Math 27 (Trigonometry) or Math 29 (Pre-Calculus), which were prerequisite/co-requisite courses for Math 30 (Analytical Geometry and Calculus 1).

Instead, students who have Math 30 on their student educational plans (SEP) will be able to register for Math 30 without taking the prerequisite/corequisite courses. This is because they are no longer required as part of California Assembly Bill (AB) 1705.

  • If you would still like to take Math 27 or 29, you will need to meet with an academic counselor to enroll in either course.
  • If you need to complete Math 30 for a transfer or graduation requirement, you can enroll in it directly beginning Summer 2025.

If you have any questions or concerns, please schedule an appointment to meet with an academic counselor as soon as possible.

Psychology Course Changes

PSYC 105 Becoming PSYC 200

Beginning in Fall 2025, Psychology (PSYC) 105 has two important changes taking place.

  • PSY 105 is becoming PSY 200 (Research Methods in Psychology)
  • PSY 200 is now a three unit course (previously four units)

Because of the change in unit value (from four to three), it is important to schedule an appointment to meet with an academic counselor as soon as possible to see how this could impact your financial aid or degree or transfer progress, and discuss alternatives.

Making Transfer Between Colleges Easier for Students

The State of California is making it easier for students to ensure the courses they take at any California Community College (CCC), including Sierra College, are transferable and recognized at all 116 CCCs. With the passage of California Assembly Bill (AB) 1111, course numbers will match comparable courses offered at all CCCs.

Benefits for Students

  • Provides a consistent experience. Students who take courses at multiple community colleges in California will have the same course numbers to choose from — providing a more seamless experience.
  • Reduces excess credit (unit) accumulation. Helps students stay on track by preventing students from registering for classes they have already taken.
  • Simplifies educational planning. Students planning to attend a CSU or UC will more easily be able to map out which courses to take to earn their associate degree and transfer to a four-year university.
