Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
What are SLOs?
A Student Learning Outcome (SLO) is a statement that describes what students can do as a result of their educational experiences. SLOs describe the knowledge gained, skills and abilities acquired or demonstrated, and attitudes or values changed. SLOs are the specific observable or measurable results that are expected subsequent to a learning experience.
SLOs:
- Communicate clear expectations about what’s important in a course or program
- Inform you that there is common core content across all sections of a course
- Allow you to make better decisions about programs based on outcomes results
Types of SLOs
Course SLOs (CSLOs)
Statements describing the knowledge, skills and abilities that a student will be able to demonstrate at the end of a course. The specific observable or measurable results that are expected subsequent to a learning experience in a course.
Current course SLOs are located in the class schedule under individual classes. View the Class Schedule for CSLOs.
Program SLOs (PSLOs), including Specific SLOs (SSLOs)
Statements that describe what students will know and be able to do when they complete a degree, certificate or a program. The specific observable or measurable results that are expected subsequent to a learning experience in an instructional program. Non-instructional programs include all events that occur outside of the classroom that complement the academic programs and enhance the overall student experience. The specific observable or measurable results that are expected subsequent to the experiences from student services.
Institutional SLOs (ISLOs)
Outcomes that encompass the whole student experience. The specific observable or measurable results that are expected subsequent to the overall learning experience at the institution. Sierra College assesses four types of outcomes: ISLOs, PSLOs (or non-instructional SSLOs), and CSLOs. Click on the program tabs below to view related outcomes and results.
Students attend Sierra College for a variety of reasons. Based on their own educational goals and experiences, students will develop skills in the following areas:
- Communication
- Critical and Creative Thinking
- Citizenship
